The Lantern

Matthew6

Giving to the Needy

But beware of doing your righteousness before men in order to be seen by them; and if not, you have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens.

When therefore you may do acts of charity, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Amen I say to you, they have their reward.

But you, doing charity, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

so that your giving may be in the secret. And your Father, the One seeing in the secret, will reward you.

The Lord’s Prayer

And when you may pray, you will not be like the hypocrites; for they love to pray having stood in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, so that they may be seen by men. Amen I say to you, they have their reward.

But you yourself, when you may pray, enter into your room; and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret. And your Father, the One seeing in the secret, will reward you.

And praying, do not use vain repetitions like the pagans; for they think that in their many words they will be heard.

Do not therefore be like them; for your Father has known of what things you have need before your asking Him.

Thus therefore pray you yourselves: ‘Our Father who is in the heavens, hallowed be Your name;

Your kingdom come; Your will be done, as in heaven so also upon earth;

grant us today our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we ourselves also forgive our debtors;

and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil.’

For if you shall forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive you also;

but unless you shall forgive men, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Proper Fasting

And whenever you may fast, do not be gloomy like the hypocrites; for they disfigure their appearance so that they may appear to men as fasting. Amen I say to you, they have their reward.

But you yourself, fasting, anoint your head and wash your face,

so that you may not appear to men as fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret. And your Father, the One seeing in the secret, will reward you.

Treasures in Heaven

Do not store up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal;

but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy, and where thieves do not break in nor steal.

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The Lamp of the Body

The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye shall be clear, your whole body will be full of light;

but if your eye shall be evil, all your body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is within you is darkness, how great that darkness!

No one is able to serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and will love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and will despise the other. You are not able to serve God and money.

Do Not Worry

Because of this I say to you: do not be anxious about your life, what you may eat or what you may drink, nor about your body, what you may put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow nor do they reap nor do they gather into barns — and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you yourselves much more valuable than they?

And who from among you, being anxious, is able to add one cubit to his stature?

And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow; they do not labour nor do they spin.

But I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.

But if God thus clothes the grass of the field, being here today and tomorrow being thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Do not therefore be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all of them.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Do not therefore be anxious about the things of tomorrow; for tomorrow will be anxious about itself. Sufficient to the day is its trouble.
