The Lantern

Matthew5

The Sermon on the Mount

And having seen the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and when He had sat down, His disciples came to Him.

And opening His mouth, He was teaching them, saying:

The Beatitudes

“Happy are the poor in the spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

Happy are those mourning, for they themselves will be encouraged.

Happy are the meek, for they themselves will inherit the earth.

Happy are those hungering and thirsting for righteousness, for they themselves will be filled.

Happy are the merciful, for they themselves will receive mercy.

Happy are the pure in heart, for they themselves will see God.

Happy are the peacemakers, for they themselves will be called sons of God.

Happy are those persecuted on account of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

Happy are you when they may insult you and may persecute you and may say all kinds of evil against you, lying, on account of Me.

Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

You yourselves are the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall become tasteless, with what will it be salted? For it is useful for nothing any longer except, being cast out, to be trampled upon by men.

You yourselves are the light of the world. A city lying on a hill is not able to be hidden;

nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but upon the lampstand, and it shines for all those in the house.

Thus should your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and may glorify your Father who is in the heavens.

The Fulfillment of the Law

Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish but to fulfil.

For amen I say to you: until heaven and earth may pass away, one iota or one stroke of a letter shall certainly not pass away from the law until everything may happen.

Whoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach others so, he will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whoever may keep and may teach them, this one will be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.

For I say to you that unless your righteousness shall abound above that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall certainly not enter into the kingdom of the heavens.

Anger and Reconciliation

You have heard that it was said to the ancients: ‘You will not murder; and whoever may murder will be liable to the judgment.’

But I myself say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to the judgment; and whoever may say to his brother, ‘Raca,’ will be liable to the Sanhedrin; and whoever may say, ‘Fool,’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

If therefore you shall offer your gift at the altar and there shall remember that your brother has something against you,

leave your gift there before the altar and go away; first be reconciled to your brother, and then, having come, offer your gift.

Be agreeing with your accuser quickly, while you are with him on the way, otherwise the accuser shall deliver you to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you will be cast into prison.

Amen I say to you, you shall certainly not come out from there until you may pay the last kodranten.

Adultery

You have heard that it was said: ‘You will not commit adultery.’

But I myself say to you that everyone who is looking upon a woman in order to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

And if your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is better for you that one of your members should perish and not all your body be cast into hell.

And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is better for you that one of your members should perish and not all your body depart into hell.

Divorce

It was also said: ‘Whoever may divorce his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce.’

But I myself say to you that everyone who is divorcing his wife, except on account of sexual immorality, causes her to be adulterated; and whoever shall marry her who has been divorced commits adultery.

Oaths and Vows

Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients: ‘You will not swear falsely, but you will keep your oaths to the Lord.’

But I myself say to you not to swear at all: neither by heaven, because it is the throne of God,

nor by the earth, because it is the footstool of His feet, nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King;

nor may you swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.

But let your statement be ‘Yes, yes’ and ‘No, no’; and what is excessive of these comes from the evil.

Love Your Enemies

You have heard that it was said: ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’

But I myself say to you not to resist the evil person. Instead, whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also;

and to the one willing to sue you and to take your tunic, yield to him the cloak also;

and whoever will compel you to go one mile, go with him two.

To the one asking you, give; and do not turn away from the one desiring to borrow from you.

You have heard that it was said: ‘You will love your neighbour and will hate your enemy.’

But I myself say to you: love your enemies and pray for those persecuting you,

so that you may be sons of your Father who is in the heavens; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and the good, and He sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

For if you shall love those loving you, what reward have you? Do not the tax collectors also do the same?

And if you shall greet your brothers only, what excessive thing do you? Do not the Gentiles also do the same?

You yourselves therefore will be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
