Matthew4

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit, to be tempted by the devil.

And having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.

And the one tempting, having come, said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, speak, that these stones may become loaves of bread.”

But He, answering, said, “It has been written: ‘Not by bread alone will man live, but by every declaration coming out through the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil takes Him to the holy city and set Him upon the pinnacle of the temple,

and says to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it has been written that ‘To His angels He will give orders concerning You, and in their hands will they bear You up, otherwise You may strike Your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus was saying to him, “Again it has been written: ‘You will not test the Lord your God.’”

Again the devil takes Him to an exceedingly high mountain and shows Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory,

and he says to Him, “All these things will I give You, if falling down You shall worship me.”

Then Jesus says to him, “Go away, Satan! For it has been written: ‘The Lord your God you will worship, and Him alone will you serve.’”

Then the devil leaves Him; and behold, angels came and were ministering to Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

Now having heard that John was delivered up, He withdrew into Galilee.

And having left Nazareth, having come, He dwelt at Capernaum, which is on the sea-side in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,

that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying:

“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles —

the people sitting in darkness have seen a great light, and to those sitting in the land and shadow of death, a light has dawned on them.”

From that time Jesus began to proclaim and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.”

The First Disciples

Now walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who is named Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

And He says to them, “Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

And immediately, having left the nets, they followed Him.

And having gone on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them.

And immediately, having left the boat and their father, they followed Him.

Jesus Heals the Multitudes

And He was going through all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

And the news of Him went out into all Syria; and they brought to Him all those having sickness, oppressed by various diseases and pains, and those being demonised and those being epileptic and those paralytic; and He healed them.

And great crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and beyond the Jordan.
