Mark15

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

And immediately, in the morning, the chief priests, having formed a counsel with the elders and scribes and all the Council, having bound Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.

And Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And answering him He says, “You have spoken.”

And the chief priests were accusing Him of many things.

And Pilate again was questioning Him, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they accuse You!”

But Jesus no longer answered anything, so as to amaze Pilate.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

Now at the feast he was releasing to them one prisoner, whichever they were requesting.

And there was the one being named Barabbas, bound with the rebels who had committed murder in the insurrection.

And the crowd, having come up, began to beg him to do even as he was doing for them.

But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you wish that I release to you the King of the Jews?”

For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him up because of envy.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that instead he may release Barabbas to them.

Pilate Delivers Up Jesus

And Pilate, answering again, was saying to them, “What then do you wish that I may do to Him whom you named the King of the Jews?”

And they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”

And Pilate was saying to them, “What evil indeed did He commit?” But they shouted excessively, “Crucify Him!”

And Pilate, desiring to do that which was satisfactory to the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and he delivered Jesus, having flogged Him, that He may be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

And the soldiers led Him away into the palace — that is, the Praetorium — and they call together all the cohort.

And they dress Him in purple, and having twisted together a crown of thorns, they placed it on Him;

and they began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

And they were striking His head with a reed and were spitting on Him, and bending the knees, they were kneeling down to Him.

And when they had mocked Him, they took off the purple from Him and put on Him His garments. And they are leading Him out that they may crucify Him.

The Crucifixion

And they compel one passing by, Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, that he may carry His cross.

And they bring Him to Golgotha, a place which is, being translated, Place of a Skull.

And they were offering Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.

And having crucified Him, they also divide for themselves His garments, casting lots for them, who may take what.

Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

And there was the inscription of the accusation against Him written: “The King of the Jews.”

And with Him they crucify two robbers, one at the right hand and one at His left.

[And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was counted with the lawless.”]

And those passing by were denigrating Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are destroying the temple and building it in three days,

save Yourself, descending from the cross!”

Likewise also the chief priests, mocking among one another with the scribes, were saying, “Others He saved; Himself He is not able to save.

The Christ, the King of Israel — let Him descend now from the cross, that we may see and may believe.” And those crucified with Him were upbraiding Him.

The Death of Jesus

And when the sixth hour was arriving, darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.

And on the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” — which is, being translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

And some of those having stood by, listening, were saying, “Behold, He calls Elijah.”

And someone, having run and having filled a sponge with vinegar, having put it on a reed, was giving Him to drink, saying, “Wait! Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”

But Jesus, having uttered a loud cry, breathed His last.

And the veil of the temple was torn into two, from top until bottom.

And the centurion, who had stood opposite Him, having seen that He breathed His last thus, said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”

And there were also women looking on from afar off, among whom also Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the least and of Joses, and Salome,

who, when He was in Galilee, were following Him and were ministering to Him — and many other women, those having come up with Him to Jerusalem.

The Burial of Jesus

And evening having already arrived, since it was the Preparation — that is, before the Sabbath —

Joseph from Arimathea came, a prominent Council member who himself also was waiting for the kingdom of God; having boldness, he went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

And Pilate wondered if He has already died, and having called the centurion to him, he questioned him whether He had died of old.

And having known it from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

And having bought a linen cloth, having taken Him down, he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a grave which was cut out of a rock. And he rolled a stone to the door of the tomb.

And Mary the Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He has been laid.
