The Lantern

Mark14

The Plot to Kill Jesus

Now it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread after two days. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how, having taken Him by stealth, they may kill Him;

for they were saying, “Not during the feast, otherwise there will be an uproar of the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

And when He is in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, when He is reclining, a woman came having an alabaster flask of fragrant oil of pure nard, of great price. Having broken the alabaster flask, she poured it on His head.

Now some were indignant within themselves: “To what has this waste of the fragrant oil been made?

For it was possible for this fragrant oil to have been sold for above three hundred denarii and to have been given to the poor.” And they were grumbling at her.

But Jesus said, “Leave her alone; why do you cause her trouble? She did a good work toward Me.

For always you have the poor with yourselves, and whenever you desire you are able to do good for them; but Me you do not always have.

What she had she performed. She came beforehand to anoint My body for the burial.

And amen I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of for a memorial of her.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

And Judas Iscariot, the one of the Twelve, went away to the chief priests that he may betray Him to them.

And having heard, they rejoiced and promised to give him money. And he was seeking how he may conveniently deliver Him up.

Preparing the Passover

And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they were to sacrifice the Passover lamb, His disciples say to Him, “Where do You desire that, having gone, we may prepare that You may eat the Passover?”

And He sends forth two of His disciples and says to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.

And wherever he enters, say to the master of the house that the Teacher says, ‘Where is My guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’

And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; and there prepare for us.”

And the disciples went away and came into the city and found even as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

The Last Supper

And when evening had arrived, He comes with the Twelve.

And when they were reclining and were eating, Jesus said, “Amen I say to you that one of you will betray Me, who is eating with Me.”

They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?”

And He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve, who is dipping with Me in the bowl.

For the Son of Man indeed goes even as it has been written concerning Him; but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed. Better for him if that man was not born.”

And when they are eating, having taken bread, having spoken a blessing, He broke it and gave it to them and said, “Take; this is My body.”

And having taken a cup, having given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank of it.

And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for many.

Amen I say to you that I will certainly no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”

And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

And Jesus says to them that “All of you will fall away, for it has been written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

But after My rising, I will go before you into Galilee.”

But Peter was saying to Him, “Even if all will fall away, yet not I.”

And Jesus says to him, “Amen I say to you that you yourself, now, this night, before the rooster crows twice, three times you will deny Me.”

But he was saying overexceedingly, “If it be needful for me to die with You, I will certainly not deny You.” And likewise also all of them were saying.

Jesus Prays at Gethsemane

And they come to a place of which the name is Gethsemane, and He says to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”

And He takes Peter and James and John with Him, and He began to be greatly awe-struck and to be deeply distressed.

And He says to them, “My soul is very sorrowful until death. Remain here and watch.”

And having gone forward a little, He was falling upon the ground and was praying that, if it is possible, the hour shall pass from Him.

And He was saying, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to You; take away this cup from Me — but not what I want, but what You.”

And He comes and finds them sleeping, and He says to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Were you not able to watch one hour?

Watch and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.”

And again, having gone away, He prayed, having said the same thing.

And again, having come, He found them sleeping; for their eyes were being wearied, and they did not know what they may answer Him.

And He comes the third time and says to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is delivered up into the hands of the sinful.

Rise, let us go. Behold, the one betraying Me has drawn near!”

The Betrayal of Jesus

And immediately, while he is yet speaking, Judas comes up, one of the Twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

Now the one delivering Him up had given a sign to them, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He it is. Seize Him and lead Him away securely.”

And having arrived, immediately having come up to Him, he says, “Rabbi,” and he kissed Him.

And they laid the hands on Him and seized Him.

Then a certain one of those having stood by, drawing the sword, struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.

And answering, Jesus said to them, “As against a robber have you come out with swords and clubs to capture Me?

Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But it is that the Scriptures may be fulfilled.”

And having left Him, all fled.

And a certain young man was accompanying Him, having cast a linen cloth about his naked body; and they seize him.

And having left behind the linen cloth, he fled naked.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

And they led Jesus away to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes come together.

And Peter followed Him from afar off, until within, to the court of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the light.

And the chief priests and all the Council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they were finding none.

For many were bearing false testimony against Him, but their testimonies were not alike.

And some, having risen up, were bearing false testimony against Him, saying

that “We ourselves heard Him saying that ‘I will destroy this temple, the one made with hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands.’”

And not even thus was their testimony alike.

And the high priest, having stood up in the midst, questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What about what these testify against You?”

But He was silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest was questioning Him and says to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”

And Jesus said, “I am. And you will behold the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

And the high priest, having torn his garments, says, “What need have we any more of witnesses?

You heard the blasphemy. What does it appear to you?” And all condemned Him to be deserving of death.

And some began to spit upon Him and to cover up His face and to strike Him and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with the palms.

Peter Denies Jesus

And when Peter is below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest comes;

and having seen Peter warming himself, having looked at him, she says, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”

But he denied it, saying, “Neither do I know nor even understand what you say.” And he went forth out into the porch — and the rooster crowed.

And the servant girl, having seen him, began again to say to those having been standing by that “This is one of them.”

But again he was denying. And after a little, again those having stood by were saying to Peter, “Truly you are of them, for you are also a Galilean.”

But he began to curse and to swear that “I do not know this man of whom you speak!”

And immediately for the second time a rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the declaration, how Jesus had said to him that “Before the rooster crows twice, three times you will deny Me.” And having broken down, he was weeping.
