I Timothy1

Paul’s Greeting to Timothy

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,

to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Correcting False Teachers

Just as I encouraged you to remain in Ephesus when I was going to Macedonia, so that you might charge certain ones not to teach other doctrine

nor to give heed to myths and endless genealogies, which bring speculations rather than the administration of God that is in faith —

and the goal of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith,

from which some, having missed the mark, have turned aside to meaningless talk,

desiring to be teachers of the law, considering neither what they say nor the things about which they confidently assert.

But we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,

knowing this: that law is not enacted for a righteous one, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for slayers of men,

for the sexually immoral, for men who lie with men, for enslavers, for liars, for perjurers — and if anything else is opposed to the sound teaching,

according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, with which I myself was entrusted.

God’s Grace to Paul

I have thankfulness to the one who strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, that he counted me faithful, having appointed me to ministry —

me formerly being a blasphemer and a persecutor and insolent. But I was shown mercy, because being ignorant I did it in unbelief;

and the grace of our Lord surpassingly increased, with faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

Trustworthy is the saying and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I myself am foremost.

But because of this I was shown mercy, so that in me the foremost Christ Jesus might display all his patience, as a pattern for those about to believe on him unto eternal life.

Now to the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory to the ages of the ages. Amen.

This charge I commit to you, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies going before as to you, so that by them you may war the good warfare,

holding faith and a good conscience — which some, having cast away, have made shipwreck concerning the faith;

among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I handed over to Satan so that they may be disciplined not to blaspheme.
