The Lantern

Genesis3

The Serpent’s Deception

Now the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat,

but of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it, and you shall not touch it, or you will die.’”

And the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise — and she took of its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

And the eyes of the two of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

God Arraigns Adam and Eve

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the wind of the day — and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

And the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

And he said, “I heard your sound in the garden, and I was afraid, because I am naked; and I hid myself.”

And he said, “Who told you that you are naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

And the man said, “The woman you gave to be with me — she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”

And the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The Fate of the Serpent

And the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all the livestock and above every animal of the field. On your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

And I will set hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall strike your head, and you shall strike his heel.”

The Punishment of Mankind

To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bear children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

And to Adam he said, “Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree that I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it’ — cursed is the ground because of you. In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

Thorns and thistles it shall grow for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.

By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground — for out of it you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”

And the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

The Expulsion from Paradise

And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skin, and clothed them.

And the LORD God said, “Look, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever —”

so the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden, to work the ground from which he was taken.

And he drove the man out; and east of the garden of Eden he stationed the cherubim, and the flame of the whirling sword, to guard the way to the tree of life.
