Genesis4

Cain and Abel

And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with the LORD.”

And again she bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain was a worker of the ground.

And at the end of days, Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground,

and Abel — he also brought, from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat portions. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and on his offering,

but on Cain and on his offering he did not look with favor. And it burned in Cain greatly, and his face fell.

And the LORD said to Cain, “Why does it burn in you, and why has your face fallen?

If you do well, will you not be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door — its desire is for you, but you shall rule over it.”

And Cain said to Abel his brother — and when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

And he said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground.

And now cursed are you from the ground, which has opened its mouth to take your brother’s blood from your hand.

When you work the ground, it shall not go on yielding its strength to you. A wanderer and a drifter you shall be on the earth.”

And Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

Look, you have driven me out this day from the face of the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden; and I shall be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth — and anyone who finds me will kill me.”

And the LORD said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD set a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would strike him down.

And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

The Descendants of Cain

And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he was building a city, and he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.

And to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.

And Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.

And Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and keep livestock.

And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of all who handle the lyre and the pipe.

And Zillah — she also bore Tubal-cain, forger of every tool of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

And Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, give ear to my saying. For I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.

If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”

Seth and Enosh

And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth — “For God has set for me another seed in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.”

And to Seth — to him also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time it was begun to call on the name of the LORD.
