Egypt Will Fall like Assyria
And it was in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude: Whom are you like in your greatness?
See, Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, beautiful of branch and a shading thicket, and high of stature; and among the thick boughs was its treetop.
Waters made it great, the deep raised it high, going with her rivers around her planting; and her watercourses she sent out to all the trees of the field.
Therefore its stature grew higher than all the trees of the field, and its boughs multiplied and its branches grew long, from the many waters, when it sent them out.
In its boughs all the birds of the heavens nested, and under its branches all the beasts of the field gave birth; and in its shade dwelt all the many nations.
And it was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its tendrils, for its root was by many waters.
Cedars did not overshadow it in the garden of God; cypresses were not like its boughs, and plane trees were not like its branches. No tree in the garden of God was like it in its loveliness.
Beautiful I made it, in the abundance of its tendrils; and all the trees of Eden that were in the garden of God envied it.
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you grew high in stature, and it set its treetop among the thick boughs, and its heart was lifted in its height,
I gave it into the hand of the ram of the nations. He surely dealt with it; for its wickedness I drove it out.
And strangers cut it down, the ruthless of the nations, and abandoned it. On the mountains and in all the valleys its tendrils fell, and its branches were broken in all the ravines of the land; and all the peoples of the earth went down from its shade and abandoned it.
On its fallen trunk all the birds of the heavens dwell, and among its branches are all the beasts of the field —
so that none of the trees of the waters grow high in their stature or set their treetop among the thick boughs, and none that drink water stand up to them in their height. For all of them are given over to death, to the land below, in the midst of the sons of man, to those going down to the pit.
Thus says the Lord GOD: On the day it went down to Sheol I made a mourning. I covered the deep over it and held back her rivers, and the many waters were shut in; and I darkened Lebanon over it, and all the trees of the field fainted over it.
At the sound of its fall I made the nations shake, when I brought it down to Sheol with those going down to the pit; and in the land below all the trees of Eden were comforted, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all that drink water.
They too went down with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword — and its arm, those who dwelt in its shade among the nations.
Whom are you like thus, in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the land below; in the midst of the uncircumcised you will lie, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, the utterance of the Lord GOD.
