A Lament for Pharaoh King of Egypt
And it was in the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Son of man, lift up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: A young lion of the nations you were likened to — and you are like a monster in the seas. And you burst out with your rivers and muddied the waters with your feet and fouled their rivers.
Thus says the Lord GOD: And I will spread my net over you in an assembly of many peoples, and they will bring you up in my dragnet.
And I will fling you on the land; on the face of the field I will hurl you. And I will make all the birds of the heavens dwell on you, and I will fill the beasts of all the earth from you.
And I will put your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains.
And I will water the land with your flowing blood, as far as the mountains; and the ravines will be filled from you.
And when I snuff you out I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. The sun I will cover with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.
All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you, and I will set darkness on your land, the utterance of the Lord GOD.
And I will provoke the heart of many peoples when I bring your breaking among the nations, to lands you have not known.
And I will make many peoples desolate over you, and their kings will shudder with shuddering over you when I brandish my sword before their faces; and they will shudder every moment, each for his own soul, on the day of your fall.
For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon will come upon you.
By the swords of mighty men I will make your multitude fall — the ruthless of the nations, all of them. And they will devastate the pride of Egypt, and all her multitude will be destroyed.
And I will make all her beasts perish from beside the many waters; and the foot of man will not muddy them again, and the hooves of a beast will not muddy them.
Then I will let their waters settle and make their rivers run like oil, the utterance of the Lord GOD.
When I make the land of Egypt a desolation, and the land desolate of its fullness, when I strike all who dwell in her — then they will know that I am the LORD.
It is a lament, and they will lament it. The daughters of the nations will lament it; over Egypt and over all her multitude they will lament it, the utterance of the Lord GOD.
Egypt Cast into the Pit
And it was in the twelfth year, on the fifteenth of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Son of man, raise a dirge over the multitude of Egypt, and bring her down — her and the daughters of majestic nations — to the land below, with those going down to the pit.
Whom do you surpass in pleasantness? Go down and be laid with the uncircumcised.
In the midst of those slain by the sword they will fall. The sword is given; drag her down and all her multitudes.
The chiefs of the mighty will speak to him from the midst of Sheol, with his helpers: They have gone down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
There is Asshur and all her assembly; around him are her graves, all of them slain, fallen by the sword —
whose graves are set in the far parts of the pit, and her assembly is around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who set terror in the land of the living.
There is Elam and all her multitude around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised to the land below, who set their terror in the land of the living; and they bear their humiliation with those going down to the pit.
In the midst of the slain they have given her a bed, with all her multitude; around him are her graves, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword. For their terror was set in the land of the living, and they bear their humiliation with those going down to the pit; in the midst of the slain he is set.
There is Meshech, Tubal and all her multitude; around him are her graves, all of them uncircumcised, run through by the sword, for they set their terror in the land of the living.
And they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen of the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, and they set their swords under their heads; but their iniquities are on their bones, for the terror of the mighty was in the land of the living.
And you, in the midst of the uncircumcised you will be broken and will lie with those slain by the sword.
There is Edom, her kings and all her leaders, who in their might were set with those slain by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised and with those going down to the pit.
There are the chieftains of the north, all of them, and every Sidonian, who went down with the slain, ashamed in the terror of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword and bear their humiliation with those going down to the pit.
Pharaoh will see them and be comforted over all his multitude — Pharaoh and all his force, slain by the sword, the utterance of the Lord GOD.
For I set my terror in the land of the living; and he will be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword — Pharaoh and all his multitude, the utterance of the Lord GOD.
