And it happened, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Look, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.
Then Saultookthreethousandchosenmenout of all Israel, and wentto seekDavidand his menuponthe rocksof the wild goats.
And he cameto the sheepcotesby the way, where was a cave;and Saulwent into coverhis feet:and Davidand his menremainedin the sidesof the cave.
And the menof Davidsaidto him, Look the dayof which the LORDsaidto you, Look, I will deliveryour enemyinto your hand, that you may doto him as it shall seem goodto you. Then Davidarose, and cut offthe skirtof Saul’srobesecretly.
And it happened afterward, that David’sheartstruckhim, because he had cut offSaul’sskirt.
And he said to his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.
So Davidstayedhis servantswith these words, and sufferedthem not to riseagainst Saul. But Saulrose upout of the cave, and wenton his way.
Davidalso aroseafterward, and went outof the cave, and criedafterSaul, saying,My lordthe king. And when Saullookedbehindhim, Davidstoopedwith his faceto the earth, and bowedhimself.
And David said to Saul, Why do you hear men’s words, saying, Look, David seeks your hurt?
Look, this day your eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill you: but my eye spared you; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’s anointed.
Moreover, my father, see, yes, seethe skirtof your robein my hand:for in that I cut offthe skirtof your robe, and killedyou not, knowyou and seethat there is neither evilnor transgressionin my hand, and I have not sinnedagainst you; yet you huntmy soulto takeit.
The LORDjudgebetween me and you, and the LORDavengeme of you: but my handshall not be upon you.
As saysthe proverbof the ancients,Wickednessproceedsfrom the wicked:but my handshall not be upon you.
After whom has the king of Israel come out? after whom do you pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.
The LORDtherefore be judge, and judgebetween me and you, and see,and pleadmy cause, and deliverme out of your hand.
