And Samueldied;and all the Israeliteswere gathered together, and lamentedhim, and buriedhim in his houseat Ramah. And Davidarose, and went downto the wildernessof Paran.
David, Nabal, and Abigail
And there was a manin Maon, whose possessionswere in Carmel;and the manwas verygreat, and he had threethousandsheep, and a thousandgoats:and he was shearinghis sheepin Carmel.
Now the nameof the manwas Nabal;and the nameof his wifeAbigail:and she was a womanof goodunderstanding, and of a beautifulcountenance:but the manwas churlishand evilin his doings;and he was of the house of Caleb.
And Davidheardin the wildernessthat Nabaldid shearhis sheep.
And Davidsent outtenyoung men,and Davidsaidto the young men,Get you upto Carmel, and goto Nabal, and greethim in my name:
And thus shall you sayto him that livesin prosperity, Peacebe both to you, and peacebe to your house, and peacebe to all that you have.
And now I have heardthat you have shearers:now your shepherdswhich were with us, we hurtthem not, neither was there oughtmissingto them, all the whilethey were in Carmel.
Askyour young men,and they will showyou. Therefore let the young menfindfavorin your eyes:for we comein a goodday:give,I pray you, whatever comesto your handto your servants, and to your sonDavid.
And when David’syoung mencame, they spoketo Nabalaccording to all those wordsin the nameof David, and ceased.
And NabalansweredDavid’sservants, and said,Who is David?and who is the sonof Jesse?there be manyservantsnow a daysthat break awayevery manfromhis master.
Shall I then takemy bread, and my water, and my fleshthat I have killedfor my shearers, and giveit to men, whom I knownot whence they be?
So David’syoung menturnedtheir way,and went again, and cameand toldhim all those sayings.
And Davidsaidto his men,Gird you onevery manhis sword. And they girded onevery manhis sword;and Davidalso girded onhis sword:and there went upafterDavidabout fourhundredmen;and two hundredremainedby the stuff.
But oneof the young mentoldAbigail,Nabal’swife, saying,Look, Davidsentmessengersout of the wildernessto saluteour master;and he railedon them.
But the menwere verygoodto us, and we were not hurt, neither missedwe anything,as long aswe were conversantwith them, when we were in the fields:
They were a wallto us both by nightand day,all the whilewe were with them keepingthe sheep.
Now therefore knowand considerwhat you will do;for evilis determinedagainst our master, and against all his household:for he is such a sonof Belial, that a man cannot speakto him.
Abigail Intercedes for Nabal
Then Abigailmade haste, and tooktwo hundredloaves, and twobottlesof wine, and fivesheepready dressed, and fivemeasuresof parchedgrain, and a hundredclusters of raisins, and two hundredcakesof figs, and laidthem on donkeys.
And she saidto her servants,Go onbeforeme; look, I comeafteryou. But she toldnot her husbandNabal.
And it was so, as she rodeon the donkey, that she came downby the covertof the hill, and indeed, Davidand his mencame downagainsther; and she metthem.
Now Davidhad said,Surely in vainhave I keptall that thisfellow has in the wilderness,so that nothingwas missedof all that pertained to him: and he has requitedme evilfor good.
Soand morealso doGodto the enemiesof David,if I leaveof all that pertain to him bythe morninglightany that pissesagainst the wall.
And when AbigailsawDavid, she hurried, and lighted offthe donkey, and fellbeforeDavidon her face, and bowedherself to the ground,
And fellat his feet, and said,Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquitybe: and let your maidservant,I pray you, speakin your audience, and hearthe wordsof your maidservant.
Letnot my lord,I pray you, regardthis manof Belial, even Nabal:for as his nameis, so is he; Nabalis his name, and follyis with him: but I your maidservantsawnot the young menof my lord, whom you did send.
Now therefore, my lord,as the LORDlives, and as your soullives, seeing the LORDhas withholdenyou from comingto shed blood, and from avengingyourself with your own hand, now let your enemies, and they that seekevilto my lord,be as Nabal.
And now this blessingwhich your maidservanthas broughtto my lord, let it even be givento the young menthat followmy lord.
I pray you, forgivethe trespassof your maidservant:for the LORDwill certainlymakemy lorda surehouse;because my lordfightsthe battlesof the LORD,and evilhas not been foundin you all your days.
Yet a manis risento pursueyou, and to seekyour soul:but the soulof my lordshall be boundin the bundleof lifewith the LORDyour God;and the soulsof your enemies, them shall he sling out,as out of the middleof a sling.
And it shall happen, when the LORDshall have doneto my lordaccording to all the goodthat he has spokenconcerning you, and shall have appointedyou rulerover Israel;
That this shall be no griefto you, nor offenceof heartto my lord, either that you have shedbloodcauseless,or that my lordhas avengedhimself: but when the LORDshall have dealt wellwith my lord, then rememberyour maidservant.
And Davidsaidto Abigail,Blessedbe the LORDGodof Israel, which sentyou this dayto meetme:
And blessed be your advice, and blessed are you, which have kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with my own hand.
For in very deed,as the LORDGodof Israellives, which has kept me backfrom hurtingyou, exceptyou had hurriedand cometo meetme, surely there had not been leftto Nabalby the morninglightany that pissesagainst the wall.
So Davidreceivedof her handthat which she had broughthim, and saidto her, Go upin peaceto your house;see,I have listenedto your voice, and have acceptedyour person.
And Abigailcameto Nabal;and indeed, he held a feastin his house, like the feastof a king;and Nabal’sheartwas merrywithin him, for he was verydrunken:therefore she toldhim nothing, lessor more, until the morninglight.
But it happened in the morning, when the winewas gone outof Nabal, and his wifehad toldhim these things, that his heartdiedwithinhim, and he became as a stone.
And it happened about tendaysafter, that the LORDstruckNabal, that he died.
David Marries Abigail
And when Davidheardthat Nabalwas dead,he said,Blessedbe the LORD,that has pleadedthe causeof my reproachfrom the handof Nabal, and has kepthis servantfrom evil:for the LORDhas returnedthe wickednessof Nabalupon his own head. And Davidsentand spokewith Abigail,to takeher to him to wife.
And when the servantsof Davidhad cometo Abigailto Carmel, they spoketo her, saying,Davidsentus to you, to takeyou to him to wife.
And she arose, and bowedherself on her faceto the earth, and said,Look, let your maidservantbe a servantto washthe feetof the servantsof my lord.
And Abigailhurried, and arose, and rodeupon a donkey, with fiveyoung womenof hers that wentafterher; and she wentafterthe messengersof David, and became his wife.
Davidalso tookAhinoamof Jezreel;and they were also bothof them his wives.
But Saulhad givenMichalhis daughter,David’swife,to Phaltithe sonof Laish, which was of Gallim.
