Davidtherefore departedfrom there, and escapedto the caveAdullam:and when his brothersand all his father’shouseheardit, they went downthere to him.
And every onethat was in distress,and every onethat was in debt,and every onethat was discontented,gatheredthemselves to him; and he became a captainover them: and there were with him about fourhundredmen.
And Davidwentfrom there to Mizpahof Moab:and he saidto the kingof Moab,Let my fatherand my mother,I pray you, come forth,and be with you, till I knowwhat Godwill dofor me.
And he broughtthem beforethe kingof Moab:and they dweltwith him all the whilethat Davidwas in the hold.
And the prophetGadsaidto David,Remainnot in the hold;depart,and getyou into the landof Judah.Then Daviddeparted,and cameinto the forestof Hareth.
Saul Slays the Priests of Nob
When Saulheardthat Davidwas discovered,and the menthat were with him, (now Saulremainedin Gibeahunder a treein Ramah,having his spearin his hand,and all his servantswere standingabout him;)
Then Saulsaidto his servantsthat stoodabout him, Hear now,you Benjamites;will the sonof Jessegiveevery one of you fieldsand vineyards,and makeyou all captainsof thousands,and captainsof hundreds;
That all of you have conspiredagainst me, and there is none that showsme that my sonhas made a leaguewith the sonof Jesse,and there is none of you that is sorryfor me, or showsto me that my sonhas stirred upmy servantagainst me, to lie in wait,as at this day?
Then answeredDoegthe Edomite,which was setover the servantsof Saul,and said,I sawthe sonof Jessecomingto Nob,to Ahimelechthe sonof Ahitub.
And he inquiredof the LORDfor him, and gavehim provisions,and gavehim the swordof Goliaththe Philistine.
Then the kingsentto callAhimelechthe priest,the sonof Ahitub,and all his father’shouse,the prieststhat were in Nob:and they cameall of them to the king.
And Saulsaid,Hearnow, you sonof Ahitub.And he answered,Here I am, my lord.
And Saulsaidto him, Why have you conspiredagainst me, you and the sonof Jesse,in that you have givenhim bread,and a sword,and have inquiredof Godfor him, that he should riseagainst me, to lie in wait,as at this day?
Then Ahimelechansweredthe king,and said,And who is so faithfulamong all your servantsas David,which is the king’sson in law,and goesat your bidding,and is honorablein your house?
Did I thenbeginto inquireof Godfor him? be it far from me:let not the kingimputeanythingto his servant,nor to all the houseof my father:for your servantknewnothingof all this, lessor more.
And the kingsaid,You shall surelydie,Ahimelech,you, and all your father’shouse.
And the kingsaidto the footmenthat stoodabout him, Turn,and slaythe priestsof the LORD;because their handalso is with David,and because they knewwhen he fled,and did not showit to me. But the servantsof the kingwouldnot put forththeir handto fallupon the priestsof the LORD.
And the kingsaidto Doeg,Turnyou, and fallupon the priests.And Doegthe Edomiteturned,and he fellupon the priests,and slewon that dayeightyand fivepersonsthat did weara linenephod.
And Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
And oneof the sonsof Ahimelechthe sonof Ahitub,namedAbiathar,escaped,and fledafterDavid.
And Abiathar showed David that Saul had slain the LORD’s priests.
And Davidsaidto Abiathar,I knewit that day,when Doegthe Edomitewas there, that he would surelytellSaul:I have occasionedthe death of all the personsof your father’shouse.
Remainyou with me, fearnot: for he that seeksmy lifeseeksyour life:but with me you shall be in safeguard.
