A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to the pure of heart.
Surely God Is Good to Israel
But as for me, my feet had almost turned aside; my steps had nearly slipped.
For I was envious of the boastful when I saw the peace of the wicked.
For there are no pangs at their death, and their body is fat.
In the trouble of mankind they are not, and with humanity they are not stricken.
Therefore pride is their necklace; violence wraps them as a garment.
Their eye bulges from fatness; the imaginations of the heart overflow.
They scoff and speak with malice of oppression; from on high they speak.
They have set their mouth in the heavens, and their tongue walks about in the earth.
Therefore his people turn back here, and waters of abundance are drained by them.
And they have said, “How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
See — these are the wicked; and always at ease, they have increased wealth.
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and washed my hands in innocence.
And I have been stricken all the day, and my rebuke comes every morning.
If I had said, “I will recount it thus,” see, I would have betrayed the generation of your sons.
And I thought to know this — it was trouble in my eyes,
until I came to the sanctuaries of God; then I understood their end.
Surely in slippery places you set them; you make them fall to ruins.
How they have become a horror in a moment! They are swept away, finished by terrors.
Like a dream after waking, Lord, when you rouse yourself you will despise their image.
When my heart was soured and I was pierced in my kidneys,
then I was brutish and did not know; I was a beast with you.
Yet I am continually with you; you have taken hold of my right hand.
By your counsel you guide me, and afterward you will take me to glory.
Whom have I in the heavens? And with you I desire nothing on earth.
My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever.
For see — those far from you will perish; you destroy everyone who whores away from you.
But as for me, the nearness of God is good for me; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, to recount all your works.
