The Lantern

Psalms44

To the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah. A maskil. God, with our ears we have heard; our fathers have recounted to us the work you worked in their days, in the days of old.

Redeem Us, O God

You with your hand dispossessed nations and planted them; you broke peoples and sent them out.

For not by their sword did they inherit the land, and their arm did not save them; but your right hand and your arm and the light of your face, for you were pleased with them.

You are he, my King, God; command the salvations of Jacob.

Through you we push down our foes; through your name we trample those who rise against us.

For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not save me.

For you have saved us from our foes, and those who hate us you have put to shame.

In God we have boasted all the day, and your name we will give thanks to forever. Selah.

Yet you have rejected and humiliated us, and you do not go out with our armies.

You make us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered for themselves.

You give us like sheep for food, and among the nations you have scattered us.

You sell your people for no wealth, and you did not increase by their price.

You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.

You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

All the day my humiliation is before me, and the shame of my face has covered me,

at the voice of the one who reproaches and reviles, before the enemy and the avenger.

All this has come upon us, and we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant.

Our heart has not turned back, and our steps have not swerved from your path,

though you have crushed us in the place of jackals and covered us over with the shadow of death.

If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a strange god,

would not God search this out? For he knows the hidden things of the heart.

But for your sake we are killed all the day; we are reckoned as sheep for slaughter.

Wake up! Why do you sleep, Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.

Why do you hide your face and forget our affliction and our oppression?

For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the earth.

Rise as a help for us, and redeem us for the sake of your loyal love.
