Psalms39

To the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. I said, “I will guard my ways from sinning with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle while the wicked is before me.”

I Will Watch My Ways

I was mute in silence; I held my peace even from good, and my pain was stirred up.

My heart grew hot within me; in my murmuring a fire burned; I spoke with my tongue:

“Make known to me, LORD, my end, and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am.”

See, you have given my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man standing is entirely a breath. Selah.

Surely a man walks about as an image; surely for a breath they are in turmoil; he heaps up and does not know who will gather it in.

And now, what have I waited for, Lord? My hope — it is in you.

From all my transgressions rescue me; do not make me the reproach of the fool.

I was mute; I did not open my mouth, for you yourself have done it.

Remove your plague from upon me; from the hostility of your hand I am finished.

With rebukes for iniquity you discipline a man, and you melt away what he treasures like a moth. Surely every man is a breath. Selah.

Hear my prayer, LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears, for I am a sojourner with you, a resident alien, like all my fathers.

Look away from me, that I may brighten before I go and am no more.
