The Lantern

Philemon1

Greetings from Paul and Timothy

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy the brother, to Philemon our beloved and fellow worker,

and to Apphia the sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church at your house:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philemon’s Faith and Love

I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers,

hearing of your love and the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the holy ones,

so that the partnership of your faith may become effective in the knowledge of every good thing that is in us for Christ.

For I had much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the holy ones have been refreshed through you, brother.

Paul’s Appeal for Onesimus

Therefore, though having much boldness in Christ to command you to do what is fitting,

for the sake of love I rather encourage you — being such a one as Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus —

I encourage you for my child, whom I begot in my chains, Onesimus,

who once was useless to you but now is useful both to you and to me,

whom I have sent back to you — him, that is, my own heart.

I was wanting to keep him with myself, so that on your behalf he might serve me in the chains of the gospel;

but apart from your consent I wished to do nothing, so that your good might not be as by necessity but willingly.

For perhaps because of this he was separated for an hour, so that you might have him back eternally,

no longer as a slave but above a slave, a beloved brother — especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

If therefore you hold me a partner, receive him as me.

And if he has wronged you in anything, or owes you, charge that to me.

I, Paul, wrote it with my own hand; I will repay it — not to say to you that you owe me even your own self besides.

Yes, brother, let me have benefit of you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.

Having been persuaded of your obedience, I wrote to you, knowing that you will do even beyond what I say.

And at the same time prepare a lodging for me, for I hope that through your prayers I will be granted to you.

Additional Greetings

Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you,

as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow workers.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
