Cleansing the Camps

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Command the sons of Israel to send out of the camp everyone with tzaraath, and everyone with a discharge, and everyone unclean by a dead soul.

Male and female alike you shall send out; outside the camp you shall send them, so that they do not make their camps unclean, where I dwell in their midst.”

And the sons of Israel did so, and sent them outside the camp; as the LORD had spoken to Moses, so the sons of Israel did.

Confession and Restitution

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Speak to the sons of Israel: A man or a woman, when they commit any of the sins of mankind, breaking faith with the LORD, and that soul becomes guilty,

then they shall confess their sin that they have done; and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, and add a fifth of it to it, and give it to the one against whom he became guilty.

But if the man has no redeemer to whom restitution for the guilt may be made, the restitution for the guilt belongs to the LORD, to the priest — besides the ram of atonement with which atonement is made for him.

And every contribution of all the holy things of the sons of Israel that they bring near to the priest shall be his.

And each man’s holy things shall be his own; what a man gives to the priest shall be his.”

The Adultery Test

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: Any man whose wife goes astray and breaks faith with him,

and a man lies with her carnally, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she is undetected — though she has made herself unclean — and there is no witness against her, and she was not caught;

and a spirit of jealousy comes over him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she has made herself unclean — or a spirit of jealousy comes over him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she has not made herself unclean —

then the man shall bring his wife to the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her: a tenth of an ephah of barley meal. He shall pour no oil on it, and put no frankincense on it, for it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering of remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance.

And the priest shall bring her near and stand her before the LORD.

And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the Dwelling the priest shall take, and put it into the water.

And the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, and unbind the hair of the woman’s head, and put in her hands the grain offering of remembrance — it is a grain offering of jealousy — and in the hand of the priest shall be the bitter water that brings the curse.

And the priest shall put her under oath, and say to the woman: ‘If no man has lain with you, and if you have not gone astray into uncleanness while under your husband, be free of this bitter water that brings the curse.

But you — if you have gone astray while under your husband, and if you have made yourself unclean, and a man other than your husband has given you his lying with you’ —

then the priest shall put the woman under the oath of the curse, and the priest shall say to the woman — ‘the LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh fall away and your belly swell;

and may this water that brings the curse go into your inward parts, to make the belly swell and the thigh fall away.’ And the woman shall say, ‘Amen, amen.’

And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and wipe them off into the bitter water.

And he shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings the curse; and the water that brings the curse shall enter her as bitterness.

And the priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy from the woman’s hand, and wave the grain offering before the LORD, and bring it near to the altar.

And the priest shall take a handful of the grain offering as its memorial portion, and burn it on the altar; and afterward he shall make the woman drink the water.

And when he has made her drink the water, then it shall be: if she has made herself unclean and broken faith with her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter her as bitterness, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away; and the woman shall become a curse in the midst of her people.

But if the woman has not made herself unclean, and she is clean, then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed.

This is the instruction of jealousy, when a wife goes astray while under her husband and makes herself unclean,

or when a spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous of his wife: he shall stand the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall do to her all this instruction.

And the man shall be free of iniquity, but that woman shall bear her iniquity.”
