The Two Silver Trumpets

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Make for yourself two trumpets of silver; of hammered work you shall make them. And they shall be for you for calling the congregation and for setting out the camps.

And when they blow them, all the congregation shall gather to you at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

And if they blow only one, then the leaders, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather to you.

And when you blow a blast, the camps that camp on the east shall set out.

And when you blow a second blast, the camps that camp on the south shall set out. A blast they shall blow for their settings-out.

But when the assembly is to be gathered, you shall blow — but you shall not sound a blast.

And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and they shall be for you a statute forever throughout your generations.

And when you go to war in your land against the foe who oppresses you, you shall sound a blast on the trumpets; and you shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and be saved from your enemies.

And on the day of your rejoicing, and at your appointed times, and at the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be for you a remembrance before your God. I am the LORD your God.”

From Sinai to Paran

And it was in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, that the cloud lifted from over the Dwelling of the testimony.

And the sons of Israel set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud settled in the wilderness of Paran.

And they set out for the first time, at the mouth of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

And the banner of the camp of the sons of Judah set out first, by their hosts; and over its host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab,

and over the host of the tribe of the sons of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar,

and over the host of the tribe of the sons of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon.

Then the Dwelling was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set out, carrying the Dwelling.

And the banner of the camp of Reuben set out, by their hosts; and over its host was Elizur the son of Shedeur,

and over the host of the tribe of the sons of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai,

and over the host of the tribe of the sons of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy things; and the Dwelling was set up before they came.

And the banner of the camp of the sons of Ephraim set out, by their hosts; and over its host was Elishama the son of Ammihud,

and over the host of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur,

and over the host of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni.

And the banner of the camp of the sons of Dan set out, the rear guard of all the camps, by their hosts; and over its host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai,

and over the host of the tribe of the sons of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran,

and over the host of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.

These were the settings-out of the sons of Israel by their hosts — and they set out.

And Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out to the place of which the LORD said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will do you good; for the LORD has spoken good concerning Israel.”

And he said to him, “I will not go; but to my own land and to my own kindred I will go.”

And he said, “Please do not leave us — for you know our camping places in the wilderness, and you shall be eyes for us.

And it shall be, if you go with us — that good that the LORD does for us, we will do for you.”

And they set out from the mountain of the LORD a journey of three days; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD set out before them a journey of three days, to seek out a resting place for them.

And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day, when they set out from the camp.

And it was, when the ark set out, that Moses said, “Arise, O LORD, and let your enemies be scattered; and let those who hate you flee before your face.”

And when it rested, he said, “Return, O LORD, to the ten thousand thousands of Israel.”
