Matthew11

John’s Inquiry

And it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities.

And John, having heard in the prison the works of the Christ, having sent through his disciples,

said to Him, “Are You Yourself the coming One, or are we to look for another?”

And Jesus, answering, said to them: “Having gone, relate to John what you hear and see:

blind receive sight and lame walk, lepers are cleansed and deaf hear, and dead are raised, and poor are evangelised.

And happy is he who shall not fall away in Me.”

Jesus Testifies about John

And as these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in delicate clothing? Behold, those wearing the delicate clothing are in the houses of kings.

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one more excellent than a prophet.

For this is he concerning whom it has been written: ‘Behold, I myself send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’

Amen I say to you, among those born of women there has not been raised one greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of the heavens is taken by violence, and the violent claim it.

For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

And if you are willing to receive it, he himself is Elijah who is about to come.

The one having ears, let him hear.

But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, who, calling out to the others,

say: ‘We piped for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not wail.’

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a man a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her deeds.”

Woe to the Unrepentant

Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had taken place, because they did not repent:

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles which came to pass in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.

And you, Capernaum — surely you will not be exalted to heaven? You will go down to Hades! For if the miracles that were happening in you had happened in Sodom, it would have remained until the day.

But I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”

Rest for the Weary

At that time Jesus, answering, said: “I fully consent to You, Father, Lord of the heaven and the earth, for You did hide these things from wise and learned, and did reveal them to little children.

Yes, O Father, for thus it was well-pleasing before You.

All things were delivered to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and to whom the Son shall choose to reveal Him.

Come to Me, all you who are toiling and burdened, and I myself will give you rest.

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
