The Lantern

Matthew10

The Twelve Apostles

And having summoned His twelve disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness.

And the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon who is named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;

Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one also having betrayed Him.

The Ministry of the Twelve

These twelve Jesus sent forth, having instructed them, saying: “Into the way of the Gentiles do not go off, and into any city of the Samaritans do not enter;

but go rather to those perishing sheep of the house of Israel.

And going on, proclaim, saying that, ‘The kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.’

Heal those ailing, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.

Take along neither gold nor silver nor copper in your belts,

nor a provision-bag for the way, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff; for the workman is worthy of his provisions.

And into whatever city or village you may enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there remain until you may go forth.

And entering into the house, greet it.

And if indeed the house shall be worthy, let your peace come upon it; but unless it shall be worthy, let your peace return to you.

And whoever shall not receive you nor shall hear your words, going forth out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

Amen I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city.

Sheep among Wolves

Behold, I myself send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be therefore shrewd as the serpents and innocent as the doves.

But beware of men; for they will deliver you into courts, and in their synagogues they will flog you;

and you will also be brought before governors and kings on account of Me, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.

But when they may deliver you up, do not be anxious how or what you may speak; for it will be given you in that hour what you may say.

For you yourselves are not the ones speaking, but the Spirit of your Father who is speaking through you.

And brother will deliver up brother to death, and father child; and children will rise up against parents and will put them to death.

And you will be hated by all on account of My name; but the one having endured to the end, he will be saved.

But whenever they may persecute you in one city, flee to a different one; for amen I say to you, you shall certainly not have completed the cities of Israel until the Son of Man may come.

A disciple is not above the teacher, nor is a servant above his master.

It is sufficient for the disciple that he may become as his teacher, and the servant as his master. If they called on the master of the house ‘Beelzebul,’ how much more those of his household!

Fear God Alone

Do not therefore fear them; for nothing is concealed which will not be revealed, or hidden which will not be known.

What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, proclaim upon the housetops.

And do not be afraid of those killing the body but not being able to kill the soul; but rather be afraid of the One being able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Are not two sparrows sold for an assarion? And one of them will not fall to the ground apart from your Father.

And of you even the hairs of the head are all numbered.

Do not therefore fear; you yourselves are worth more than many sparrows.

Confessing Christ

Everyone therefore who will confess in Me before men, I myself also will confess in him before My Father who is in the heavens;

but whoever may deny Me before men, I myself also will deny him before My Father who is in the heavens.

Not Peace but a Sword

Do not think that I came to bring peace to the earth; I did not come to bring peace but a sword.

For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

and the enemies of the man will be those of his household.

The one loving father or mother above Me is not worthy of Me, and the one loving son or daughter above Me is not worthy of Me;

and he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.

The one having found his life will lose it, and the one having lost his life on account of Me will find it.

The Reward of Service

The one receiving you receives Me, and the one receiving Me receives the One having sent Me.

The one receiving a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive the reward of a prophet, and the one receiving a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive the reward of a righteous man.

And whoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall certainly not lose his reward.”
