The Lantern

Luke8

Women Minister to Jesus

And it came to pass soon afterward, that he himself was traveling throughout city and village, preaching and evangelising the kingdom of God. And the Twelve were with him,

and certain women who were cured from evil spirits and infirmities: Mary who is called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,

and Joanna wife of Chuza, a steward of Herod, and Susanna, and many others, who were ministering to them out of their possessions.

The Parable of the Sower

Now when a great crowd were assembling, and those from each town are coming to him, he spoke through a parable:

“The one sowing went out to sow his seed. And in his sowing, some indeed fell along the road, and it was trampled upon, and the birds of the air devoured it.

However, other fell upon the rock, and having sprung up it withered, through the not having moisture.

And other fell in the midst of the thorns, and the thorns, having sprung up with it, choked it.

And other fell upon the good soil, and having sprung up it produced fruit a hundredfold.” Saying these things, he was calling out, “The one having ears to hear, he should hear.”

Then his disciples were asking him what this parable would mean.

And he said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God; however, to the rest it is in parables, so that ‘Seeing they shall not see, and hearing they shall not understand.’

Now this is the parable: the seed is the word of God.

Now those along the road are those who have heard; then comes the devil and takes away the word from their heart, that not having believed they may be saved.

Now those upon the rock, those who when they may hear receive the word with joy; and these have not a root, who believe for a time, and in time of testing fall away.

Now that having fallen into the thorns, these are those having heard, and moving along under cares and riches and pleasures of life they are choked, and do not mature.

Now that in the good soil, these are those who, in a worthy and good heart, having heard the word, keep it and bring forth fruit by perseverance.

The Lesson of the Lamp

Now no one, having lighted a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those entering in may see the light.

For nothing is hidden which will not become manifest, nor is anything secret which may certainly not be known and come to light.

Take heed therefore how you hear; for whoever shall have, it will be given to him; and whoever shall not have, even what he seems to have will be taken away from him.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

Then his mother and brothers came to him, and they were not able to get to him because of the crowd.

And it was told to him, “Your mother and your brothers have stood outside, wanting to see you.”

But answering he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who are hearing the word of God and doing it.”

Jesus Calms the Storm

Then it came to pass on one of the days, that he himself also climbed into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us pass over to the other side of the lake.” And they launched out.

Then when they were sailing, he fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were being swamped and were in danger.

Then having come to him, they awoke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And having arisen up, he rebuked the wind and the raging of the water; and they ceased, and there was a calm.

Then he said to them, “Where is your faith?” Then having been afraid, they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, for he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”

The Demons and the Pigs

And they sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.

Then to him having gone forth upon the land, a certain man out of the city met him, having demons. And for a long time he was not wearing clothing, and was not abiding in a house, but in the tombs.

Then having seen Jesus, having cried out, he fell down before him and said in a loud voice, “What to me myself and to you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore of you, you may not torment me!”

For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For many times it had seized him, and he was shackled with chains and being kept in fetters; and breaking the chains, he was driven by the demon into the deserts.

Now Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons were entered into him.

And they were begging him that he would not command them to go away into the abyss.

Now there was there a herd of many pigs feeding in the mountain; and they begged him that he would allow them to enter into them; and he allowed them.

Then the demons, having gone out from the man, entered into the pigs; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

Then those feeding them, having seen what had happened, fled, and they reported it to the city and to the country.

Then they went out to see that having happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting clothed and being of sound mind at the feet of Jesus. And they were afraid.

Then those having seen it related to them how the one having been demonised was healed.

And all the multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, because they were seized with great fear. Now he himself, having climbed into a boat, turned back.

However, the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging him to be taken with him. However, he sent him away, saying,

“Return to your house, and relate how much God has done for you.” And he departed through all the city, proclaiming how much Jesus did for him.

The Healing Touch of Jesus

Then when Jesus is returning, the crowd received him; for they were all looking for him.

And behold, there came a man whose name was Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue; and having fallen at the feet of Jesus, he was begging him to come to his house,

because an only daughter was to him, about twelve years old, and she was dying. Then as he is to go, the crowds were pressing around him.

And a woman being with a flux of blood for twelve years, who, having spent all the living on physicians, was neither able to be healed by no one,

having come behind him, she touched the fringe of his cloak; and immediately the flux of her blood stopped.

And Jesus said, “Who is the one having touched me?” However, when everyone is denying it, Peter said, “Master, the people surround you and press in.”

But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; for I myself know power having left from me.”

Then having seen that she was not hid, the woman came trembling, and having fallen down before him, she declared before all the people for what cause she touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace.”

Still when he is speaking, one comes from the synagogue ruler, saying that, “Your daughter has died; trouble the Teacher no longer.”

But Jesus, having heard, answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be saved.”

Then having entered into the house, he did not allow anyone to go in with him except only Peter and John and James, and the father of the child and the mother.

Now they were all weeping and were mourning for her. But he said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead, but sleeps.”

And they were laughing at him, knowing that she was dead.

Now he himself, having taken hold of her hand, called out, saying: “Child, arise.”

And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately; and he directed to be given to her to eat.

And her parents were amazed; and he instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
