Luke7

The Faith of the Centurion

And since he had completed all his declarations in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capernaum.

Then a certain centurion’s servant, being sick, was about to die, who was valued highly to him.

Then having heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, begging him that, having come, he may save his servant.

And they, having come to Jesus, were begging him earnestly, saying that, “He is worthy to whom you will grant this;

for he loves our nation, and he himself built the synagogue for us.”

And Jesus was going with them. Then already, when he is being not far distant from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not be troubled; for I am not worthy that you may come under my roof;

therefore neither counted I myself worthy to come to you. But say a word, and let my servant be healed.

For I myself also am a man appointed under authority, having soldiers under myself; and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Enact this,’ and he enacts it.”

Then having heard these things, Jesus marveled at him; and having turned to the crowd following him, he said, “I say to you, not even in Israel did I find such great faith.”

And the ones having been sent, having returned to the house, found the servant in good health.

Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son

And it came to pass on the next day, he went into a town being called Nain; and his disciples were going with him, and a great crowd.

Then as he drew near to the gate of the town, behold also, one having died was being carried out, the only begotten son from his mother; and she was a widow. And a considerable crowd of the town was with her.

And having seen her, the Lord was moved with compassion on her, and he said to her, “Do not weep.”

And having come up, he touched the bier; then those bearing it stopped. And he said, “Young man, to you I say, be arised.”

And the dead man sat up and began to speak; and he gave him to his mother.

Then fear seized all, and they were glorifying God, saying that, “A great prophet was raised up among us!” and that, “God has visited his people!”

And this report concerning him went out in all Judea and in all the surrounding region.

John’s Inquiry

And his disciples brought word to John concerning all these things.

And having called to him two certain of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you yourself the coming One, or are we to look for another?”

Then having come to him, the men said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you yourself the coming One, or are we to look for another?’”

At that very hour he healed many of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and to many blind he granted to see.

And answering he said to them, “Having gone, relate to John what you have seen and heard: blind receive sight, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and deaf hear, dead are raised, poor are evangelised.

And happy is who might not be offended in me myself.”

Jesus Testifies about John

Then when the messengers of John were departing, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

But what have you gone out to see? A man arrayed in fine clothing? Behold, those living in splendid clothing and in luxury are in the palaces.

But what have you gone out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one more excellent than a prophet.

This is he concerning whom it has been written: ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’

I say to you, among those born of women no one is a greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

And all the people having heard, even the tax collectors, declared God as righteous, having been baptized with the baptism of John;

but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God as to themselves, not having been baptized by him.

“To what therefore will I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like?

They are like to little children sitting in the marketplace and calling to each other, one says: ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’

For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’

The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold a man, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners.’

And wisdom was justified by all her children.”

A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus

Now one of the Pharisees was asking him that he may eat with him; and having entered into the house of the Pharisee, he was sat.

And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner. And she, having known that he reclines back in the house of the Pharisee, having taken an alabaster flask of fragrant oil

and having stood behind at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with the tears, and with the hairs of her head she was wiping them, and was kissing his feet and was anointing them with the fragrant oil.

Now having seen it, the Pharisee, the one having invited him, spoke within himself, saying, “This, if he was a prophet, then would he have known who and what the woman is who touches him, for she is a sinner.”

And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he: “Teacher, say it,” he says.

“There were two debtors to a certain creditor. The one was owing five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

They having nothing to pay, he forgave to both. Which therefore of them will love him more?”

Answering, Simon said, “I take it that he to whom he forgave the most.” And he said to him, “Rightly you have judged.”

And having turned to the woman, he was saying to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house; water for feet you did not give to me; however, with her tears she wet my feet, and with her hair wiped them.

A kiss you did not give to me; however, she herself, from which time I came in, has not ceased kissing my feet.

With oil you did not anoint my head; however, she herself anointed my feet with fragrant oil.

Because of this I say to you, her many sins have been forgiven, for she loved much; however, to whom little is forgiven, he loves little.”

Then he said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.”

And those reclining began to say within themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

Then he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
