The Lantern

Luke21

The Poor Widow’s Offering

Now having looked up, he saw the rich ones casting their gifts into the treasury.

Then he saw a certain poor widow casting in two lepta.

And he said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has cast in more than all;

for all these cast in the gifts out of that which was abounding to them; however she, out of her poverty, did cast all the livelihood that she had.”

Temple Destruction and Other Signs

And as some were speaking about the temple, that it has been adorned with goodly stones and with consecrated gifts, he said,

“As to these things which you are beholding, the days will come in which a stone will not be left upon a stone which will not be thrown down.”

Then they asked him, saying, “Teacher, when then will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things may soon be to take place?”

And he said, “Take heed lest you may be led astray; for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I myself am he,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ May not go after them.

Then when you may hear of wars and commotions, may not be terrified; for it behooves these things to take place first, but the end is not immediately.”

Witnessing to All Nations

Then he was saying to them, “Nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom;

there will be both great earthquakes and famines and pestilences in different places, and there will be also fearful sights and great signs from heaven.

However, before all these things they will lay their hands upon you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, leading you before kings and governors on account of my name.

It will result to you for a testimony.

Implant therefore in your hearts not to premeditate to present a defense;

for I myself will give you a mouth and wisdom which all those opposing you will not be able to resist nor to reply to.

Then you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put to death some from among you.

And you will be hated by all because of my name.

But a hair of your head may certainly not perish.

By your patient endurance do you gain yourselves your souls.

The Destruction of Jerusalem

Then when you may see Jerusalem being encircled by encampments, then know that her desolation has drawn near.

Then those in Judea, they should flee to the mountains; and those in her midst, they should depart out; and those in the countries, they should not enter into her.

For these are the days of avenging, to fill all things which written.

But woe to those having pregnancy in the womb and to the ones nursing in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land, and wrath to this people,

and they will fall by the edge of the sword and will be led captive into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles until that the times of the Gentiles may be fulfilled.

The Return of the Son of Man

And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations with perplexity, the sound of the sea and rolling surge,

when men are fainting from fear and expectation of that which is coming on the earth; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

And then will they behold the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Then of these things beginning to come to pass, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

And he spoke a parable to them: “Behold the fig tree and all the trees.

When they may sprout already, looking on them, for yourselves you know that already the summer is near.

So also you yourselves, when you may see these things coming to pass, know that the kingdom of God is near.

Amen I say to you that this generation may certainly not have passed away until when all these things may happen.

The heaven and the earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away.

Be Watchful for the Day

Now take heed to yourselves, otherwise your hearts may be burdened with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of life — and that very day may come upon you suddenly

as a snare; for it will enter upon all those sitting upon the face of all the earth.

Watch also at every season, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are soon to come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Now he was teaching during the day in the temple; and the nights, going out, he was lodging on the mount which is being called Olivet.

And all the group of people was coming early to him in the temple to hear him.
