Job1

Job’s Character and Wealth

There was a man in the land of Uz; Job was his name. And that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and turned away from evil.

And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

And his livestock was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was greater than all the sons of the east.

And his sons used to go and make a feast at the house of each on his day; and they would send and call for their three sisters, to eat and to drink with them.

And it happened, when the days of the feast had gone round, that Job would send and sanctify them, and rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all — for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned, and blessed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did all the days.

Satan’s First Attack

And it happened one day that the sons of God came to take their stand before the LORD; and the Accuser also came among them.

And the LORD said to the Accuser, “From where do you come?” And the Accuser answered the LORD and said, “From roaming about in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

And the LORD said to the Accuser, “Have you set your heart on my servant Job? For there is none like him in the earth — a man blameless and upright, who fears God and turns away from evil.”

And the Accuser answered the LORD and said, “Is it for nothing that Job fears God?

Have you not yourself put a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that is his, on every side? The work of his hands you have blessed, and his livestock has burst out in the land.

But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that is his — see if he does not bless you to your face.”

And the LORD said to the Accuser, “Look, all that is his is in your hand; only against him do not stretch out your hand.” And the Accuser went out from the presence of the LORD.

Job Loses His Children and Possessions

And it happened one day, when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,

that a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the she-donkeys grazing beside them,

and Sheba fell upon them and took them; and the young men they struck with the mouth of the sword. And I have escaped, only I alone, to tell you.”

This one was still speaking when another came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned among the sheep and the young men, and consumed them. And I have escaped, only I alone, to tell you.”

This one was still speaking when another came and said, “The Chaldeans set three companies and made a raid on the camels and took them; and the young men they struck with the mouth of the sword. And I have escaped, only I alone, to tell you.”

While this one was speaking, another came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,

and look — a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they died. And I have escaped, only I alone, to tell you.”

And Job rose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the earth and prostrated himself.

And he said, “Naked I came out from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken. Let the name of the LORD be blessed.”

In all this Job did not sin, and did not charge God with unseemliness.
