Jeremiah25

Seventy Years of Captivity

The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah — that is the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon —

which Jeremiah the prophet spoke concerning all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying:

From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, and until this day — these twenty-three years — the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, and you have not heard.

And the LORD sent to you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending; and you did not hear and did not incline your ear to hear,

saying: Return now, each from his evil way and from the evil of your deeds, and dwell on the ground the LORD gave to you and to your fathers, from everlasting and to everlasting.

And do not walk after other gods to serve them and to bow down to them, and do not provoke me with the work of your hands — and I will do you no evil.

But you did not hear me — the utterance of the LORD — so that you provoked me with the work of your hands, to your own evil.

Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Because you did not hear my words,

see, I am sending and taking all the families of the north — the utterance of the LORD — and to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, my servant; and I will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these nations round about. And I will devote them to destruction and make them a horror and a hissing and everlasting ruins.

And I will destroy from among them the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of millstones and the light of the lamp.

And this whole land will become a ruin, a horror; and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

And it will be, when seventy years are full, I will attend to the king of Babylon and to that nation — the utterance of the LORD — for their iniquity, and to the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it everlasting desolations.

And I will bring on that land all my words that I spoke against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations.

For many nations and great kings will make servants of them too, and I will repay them according to their work and according to the work of their hands.

The Cup of God’s Wrath

For thus said the LORD, the God of Israel, to me: Take this cup of the wine of wrath from my hand and make all the nations to whom I am sending you drink it.

And they will drink and reel and act madly before the sword that I am sending among them.

And I took the cup from the hand of the LORD and made all the nations drink to whom the LORD sent me:

Jerusalem and the cities of Judah and her kings, her princes — to make them a ruin, a horror, a hissing and a curse, as at this day;

Pharaoh king of Egypt and his servants and his princes and all his people;

and all the mixed people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines — Ashkelon and Gaza and Ekron and the remnant of Ashdod;

Edom and Moab and the sons of Ammon;

and all the kings of Tyre and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coast that is beyond the sea;

and Dedan and Tema and Buz, and all who clip the corners of their hair;

and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed people who dwell in the wilderness;

and all the kings of Zimri and all the kings of Elam and all the kings of Media;

and all the kings of the north, near and far, each to his brother, and all the kingdoms of the earth that are on the face of the ground. And the king of Sheshach will drink after them.

And you will say to them: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink and be drunk and vomit and fall and do not rise, before the sword I am sending among you.

And it will be, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you will say to them: Thus says the LORD of hosts: You will surely drink!

For see, in the city on which my name is called I am beginning to do evil — and you, will you be held innocent? You will not be held innocent, for a sword I am calling against all the inhabitants of the earth — the utterance of the LORD of hosts.

And you — prophesy to them all these words, and say to them: The LORD roars from on high, and from his holy dwelling he gives his voice; he roars, he roars over his pasture; a shout like those who tread he answers, to all the inhabitants of the earth.

A din has come to the end of the earth, for the LORD has a case against the nations; he enters judgment with all flesh. The wicked he has given to the sword — the utterance of the LORD.

Thus says the LORD of hosts: See, evil is going out from nation to nation, and a great storm is roused from the far parts of the earth.

And the slain of the LORD in that day will be from the end of the earth to the end of the earth. They will not be lamented and will not be gathered and will not be buried; they will be dung on the face of the ground.

The Cry of the Shepherds

Howl, shepherds, and cry out; and roll, nobles of the flock, for your days are full for slaughter; and I will scatter you, and you will fall like a vessel of delight.

And refuge will perish from the shepherds, and escape from the nobles of the flock.

A voice — the cry of the shepherds and the howling of the nobles of the flock — for the LORD is devastating their pasture.

And the pastures of peace are stilled before the burning anger of the LORD.

He has left his lair like a young lion, for their land has become a horror before the burning of the ravager and before his burning anger.
