Jeremiah24

The Good and Bad Figs

The LORD showed me, and see — two baskets of figs set before the temple of the LORD, after Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon exiled Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, and the craftsman and the smith, from Jerusalem and brought them to Babylon.

The one basket had very good figs, like first-ripe figs; and the one basket had very evil figs, which could not be eaten from evil.

And the LORD said to me: What do you see, Jeremiah? And I said: Figs. The good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, which cannot be eaten from evil.

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying:

Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard for good the exile of Judah whom I sent from this place to the land of the Chaldeans.

And I will set my eye on them for good, and I will bring them back onto this land; and I will build them and not demolish, and I will plant them and not uproot.

And I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD; and they will be a people to me, and I will be God to them, for they will return to me with all their heart.

And like the evil figs, which cannot be eaten from evil — for thus says the LORD — so will I make Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes and the remnant of Jerusalem, those remaining in this land and those dwelling in the land of Egypt.

And I will make them a trembling, an evil, to all the kingdoms of the earth — a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse — in all the places where I drive them.

And I will send among them the sword, the famine and the pestilence, until they are finished from off the ground I gave to them and to their fathers.
