Isaiah59

Sin Separates Us from God

See, the hand of the LORD is not too short to save, and his ear is not too heavy to hear.

Rather, your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, from hearing.

For your palms are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity. Your lips have spoken falsehood; your tongue mutters injustice.

There is none calling in righteousness, and none going to judgment in faithfulness. They trust in emptiness and speak worthlessness; they conceive trouble and give birth to iniquity.

Viper’s eggs they hatch, and spider’s webs they weave. The one eating their eggs dies, and the crushed one hatches out a viper.

Their webs will not become a garment, and they will not cover themselves with their deeds. Their deeds are deeds of iniquity, and the work of violence is in their palms.

Their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; devastation and breaking are in their highways.

The way of peace they do not know, and there is no justice in their tracks. Their paths they have made crooked for themselves; no one who treads in it knows peace.

Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us. We hope for light, and see, darkness; for brightness, and we walk in gloom.

We grope like the blind for a wall, and like those with no eyes we grope. We stumble at noon as in the twilight; among the vigorous we are like the dead.

We growl like bears, all of us, and like doves we moan and moan. We hope for justice, and there is none; for salvation, and it is far from us.

For our transgressions are many before you, and our sins have answered against us. For our transgressions are with us, and our iniquities — we know them:

transgressing and denying the LORD, and turning back from following our God; speaking oppression and rebellion, conceiving and murmuring from the heart words of falsehood.

And justice is turned away backward, and righteousness stands far off; for truth has stumbled in the street, and straightness cannot enter.

And truth has gone missing, and the one who turns from evil is despoiled. And the LORD saw, and it was evil in his eyes that there was no justice.

And he saw that there was no one, and he was appalled that there was no intercessor. And his own arm brought salvation for him, and his righteousness — it sustained him.

And he put on righteousness like a coat of mail, and a helmet of salvation on his head; and he put on garments of vengeance as clothing, and wrapped himself in jealousy like a robe.

The Covenant of the Redeemer

According to deeds, accordingly he will repay: fury to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the coastlands recompense he will repay.

And they will fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. For he will come like a pent-up river, which the breath of the LORD drives on.

And a Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those in Jacob who turn from transgression — the utterance of the LORD.

And as for me, this is my covenant with them, says the LORD: My spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth or from the mouth of your seed or from the mouth of the seed of your seed, says the LORD, from now and forever.
