True Fasts and Sabbaths

Call out with the throat, do not hold back! Like a horn raise your voice, and tell my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

Yet me they seek day by day, and they delight to know my ways, like a nation that has done righteousness and has not forsaken the justice of its God. They ask me for judgments of righteousness; they delight in the drawing near of God.

“Why have we fasted, and you have not seen? We have afflicted our soul, and you take no notice?” See, in the day of your fast you find delight, and all your laborers you drive hard.

See, for quarrel and strife you fast, and to strike with a fist of wickedness. You do not fast today so as to make your voice heard on high.

Is this the fast I would choose — a day for a human to afflict his soul? To bow his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes? Is this what you call a fast, and a day of favor to the LORD?

Is not this the fast I would choose: to loosen the fetters of wickedness, to untie the cords of the yoke, and to send the crushed away free, and that you tear off every yoke?

Is it not to break your bread for the hungry, and to bring the homeless poor into a house? When you see the naked, that you cover him, and from your own flesh you do not hide yourself?

Then your light will break out like the dawn, and your healing will spring up quickly; and your righteousness will go before you, the glory of the LORD your rear guard.

Then you will call and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help and he will say, Here I am. If you remove from your midst the yoke, the pointing of the finger and the speaking of iniquity,

and you offer yourself to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will rise in the darkness and your gloom will be like noon.

And the LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in parched places, and give strength to your bones. And you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.

And from you they will build the ancient ruins; the foundations of generation after generation you will raise up. And you will be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of Paths to Dwell In.

If you turn back your foot from the sabbath, from doing your own delights on my holy day, and call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the LORD honored; and you honor it, not doing your own ways, not finding your own delight and not speaking a word —

then you will take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth, and I will feed you the inheritance of Jacob your father — for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
