Qualifications for Overseers

Trustworthy is the saying: if anyone aspires to overseership, he desires a good work.

It behooves the overseer therefore to be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach;

not given to wine, not a striker but gentle, peaceable, not loving money;

managing his own household well, having children in submission with all dignity —

but if one does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for the church of God? —

not a novice, so that he may not be puffed up and fall into the judgment of the devil.

And it behooves him also to have a good testimony from those outside, so that he may not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Qualifications for Deacons

Ministers likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of dishonest gain,

holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.

And let these also be tested first; then let them minister, being blameless.

Women likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, clear-minded, faithful in all things.

Let ministers be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households well;

for those having ministered well acquire for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

The Mystery of Godliness

These things I write to you, hoping to come to you with speed;

but if I delay, so that you may know how it behooves one to conduct oneself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and base of the truth.

And confessedly great is the mystery of godliness: Who was made manifest in flesh, justified in spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
