I Peter2

The Living Stone and Chosen People

Having put aside therefore all malice and all deceit and hypocrisies and envies and all evil speakings,

as newborn babies crave the reasonable, pure milk, so that by it you may grow up unto salvation,

if you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Coming to him, a living stone rejected indeed by men but chosen and precious in the sight of God,

you yourselves also as living stones are being built up a spiritual house, into a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Therefore it is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one believing on him will certainly not be put to shame.”

To you therefore who believe is the preciousness; but to those disbelieving, “The stone that the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner,”

and “a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” They stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light —

who once were not a people but now are the people of God, who had not received mercy but now have received mercy.

Beloved, I encourage you as aliens and sojourners to abstain from the fleshly desires, which war against the soul,

keeping your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, so that in what they speak against you as evildoers, by your good works, having witnessed them, they may glorify God in the day of visitation.

Submission to Authorities

Be subject to every human institution for the sake of the Lord: whether to a king as being supreme,

or to governors as being sent through him for vengeance on evildoers and praise of well-doers.

Because this is the will of God: that by doing good you put to silence the ignorance of foolish men —

as free, and not having your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but as servants of God.

Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

Household servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unreasonable.

For this is grace: if for the sake of conscience toward God anyone endures griefs, suffering unjustly.

For what credit is it if, sinning and being struck, you will endure? But if, doing good and suffering, you will endure — this is grace before God.

Christ’s Example of Suffering

For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you may follow after his steps;

who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth;

who, being reviled, was not reviling back; suffering, was not threatening, but was delivering himself to the one judging justly;

who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness — by whose wound you were healed.

For you were going astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
