The Lantern

I Peter1

A Greeting from Peter

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the elect sojourners of the Dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,

according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

A Living Hope

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

to an inheritance imperishable and undefiled and unfading, kept in the heavens for you,

who by the power of God are being guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

In this you greatly rejoice, though for a little while at present, if it is necessary, you have been put to grief by various trials,

so that the proven genuineness of your faith — more precious than gold, which perishes though it is refined through fire — may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

whom not having seen you love, in whom now not seeing but believing you rejoice with joy inexpressible and filled with glory,

receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of souls.

Concerning this salvation the prophets sought out and searched out diligently, who prophesied of the grace toward you,

inquiring into what time or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ in them was signifying, testifying beforehand the sufferings toward Christ and the glories after these.

To them it was revealed that not to themselves but to you they were ministering these things, which now have been proclaimed to you through those who evangelized you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven — into which things angels desire to look.

A Call to Holiness

Therefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, being sober, set your hope fully upon the grace being brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

As children of obedience, do not be fashioned to the former desires in your ignorance,

but as the one who called you is holy, be yourselves also holy in all your conduct,

because it is written: “You will be holy, because I am holy.”

And if you call on as Father the one judging impartially according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your sojourn,

knowing that not by perishable things — by silver or by gold — were you redeemed from your futile conduct handed down from your fathers,

but by the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot,

foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but made manifest at the last of the times for the sake of you,

who through him believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

The Enduring Word

Having purified your souls in the obedience to the truth unto sincere brotherly love, love one another fervently from a pure heart,

having been born again not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.

Because all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers and the flower falls away,

but the word of the Lord abides to the age. And this is the word that was evangelized to you.
