I Corinthians10

Warnings from Israel’s Past

For I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,

and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,

and all ate the same spiritual food,

and all drank the same spiritual drink; for they were drinking from the spiritual rock following them, and the rock was Christ.

Nevertheless God was not well pleased with most of them, for they were strewn down in the wilderness.

Now these things have become types to us, for us not to be desirers of evil things, even as they also desired.

Neither become idolaters, even as some of them, as it has been written: “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.”

Neither should we commit sexual immorality, even as some of them committed sexual immorality, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.

Neither should we test Christ, even as some of them tested and were destroyed by the serpents.

Neither grumble, just as some of them grumbled and perished by the Destroyer.

Now these things were happening to them typologically, and were written for our admonition, to whom the ends of the ages have come.

Therefore let the one thinking he has stood take heed lest he fall.

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also provide the escape, to be able to endure it.

Flee from Idolatry

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

I speak as to sensible ones; judge for yourselves what I say.

The cup of blessing that we bless — is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break — is it not a participation in the body of Christ?

Because there is one loaf, we the many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf.

Consider Israel according to the flesh: are not those eating the sacrifices fellow partakers in the altar?

What then do I mean? That an idol-sacrifice is anything, or that an idol is anything?

Rather, that what they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not wish you to be fellow partakers with demons.

You are not able to drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you are not able to partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons.

Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

All to God’s Glory

All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.

Let no one seek his own good, but that of the other.

Eat everything being sold in the meat market, inquiring nothing on account of conscience;

for the Lord’s is the earth and its fullness.

If any of the unbelieving invites you and you wish to go, eat everything set before you, inquiring nothing on account of conscience;

but if anyone says to you, “This is a temple-sacrifice,” do not eat, on account of him who showed it and the conscience —

and I mean the conscience not your own, but that of the other. For why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?

If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denigrated for that which I give thanks?

Whether therefore you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all things to the glory of God.

Be without offense both to Jews and to Greeks and to the church of God —

even as I also please all in all things, not seeking my own profit, but that of the many, that they may be saved.
