Twelve Captains for Twelve Months
And the sons of Israel, by their number — the heads of the fathers, and the commanders of the thousands and the hundreds, and their officers who served the king in every matter of the divisions, coming in and going out month by month, for all the months of the year — each division: twenty-four thousand.
Over the first division, for the first month: Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
He was of the sons of Perez — head of all the commanders of the armies for the first month.
And over the division of the second month: Dodai the Ahohite, with his division — and Mikloth was the leader; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The commander of the third army, for the third month: Benaiah the son of Jehoiada the priest, as head; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
This is the Benaiah who was a mighty man of the Thirty and over the Thirty; and over his division was Ammizabad his son.
The fourth, for the fourth month: Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The fifth, for the fifth month: the commander Shamhuth the Izrahite; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The sixth, for the sixth month: Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The seventh, for the seventh month: Helez the Pelonite, of the sons of Ephraim; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The eighth, for the eighth month: Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahite; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The ninth, for the ninth month: Abiezer the Anathothite, of the Benjaminite; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The tenth, for the tenth month: Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zerahite; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The eleventh, for the eleventh month: Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the sons of Ephraim; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The twelfth, for the twelfth month: Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; and in his division, twenty-four thousand.
The Leaders of the Twelve Tribes
And over the tribes of Israel: for the Reubenite, the leader was Eliezer the son of Zichri; for the Simeonite, Shephatiah the son of Maacah;
for Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok;
for Judah, Elihu, one of the brothers of David; for Issachar, Omri the son of Michael;
for Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jerimoth the son of Azriel;
for the sons of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah;
for the half of Manasseh, in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner;
for Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. These were the commanders of the tribes of Israel.
And David did not take their number from twenty years old and under — for the LORD had said he would multiply Israel like the stars of the heavens.
Joab the son of Zeruiah began to count, but did not finish; and because of this, wrath came upon Israel — and the number did not go up into the count of the chronicles of King David.
David’s Various Overseers
And over the treasuries of the king: Azmaveth the son of Adiel. And over the treasuries in the field — in the cities, and in the villages, and in the towers: Jonathan the son of Uzziah.
And over the doers of the work of the field, for the tilling of the ground: Ezri the son of Chelub.
And over the vineyards: Shimei the Ramathite. And over what was in the vineyards for the stores of wine: Zabdi the Shiphmite.
And over the olive trees and the sycamores that were in the lowland: Baal-hanan the Gederite. And over the stores of oil: Joash.
And over the cattle grazing in Sharon: Shitrai the Sharonite. And over the cattle in the valleys: Shaphat the son of Adlai.
And over the camels: Obil the Ishmaelite. And over the female donkeys: Jehdeiah the Meronothite.
And over the flocks: Jaziz the Hagrite. All these were the commanders of the property that was King David’s.
The Counselors
And Jonathan, the uncle of David, was a counselor — a man of understanding, and a scribe was he; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the sons of the king.
And Ahithophel was counselor to the king; and Hushai the Archite was the friend of the king.
And after Ahithophel: Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. And the commander of the army for the king was Joab.
