The Lantern

II Timothy2

Grace and Perseverance

You therefore, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus,

and the things you have heard from me among many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men, such as will be able to teach others also.

Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

No one serving as a soldier entangles himself in the affairs of this life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him.

And if anyone also competes, he is not crowned unless he competes lawfully.

The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the fruits.

Consider what I am saying, for the Lord will grant you understanding in all things.

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, from the seed of David, according to my gospel,

in which I suffer hardship even to chains as an evildoer. But the word of God has not been bound!

Because of this I endure all things for the sake of the elect, so that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Faithful is the word: for if we died with him, we will also live with him;

if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we will deny him, he also will deny us;

if we are faithless, he abides faithful, for he cannot deny himself.

The Lord’s Approved Workman

Remind them of these things, solemnly charging them before God not to quarrel about words — for nothing profitable, but to the subversion of those hearing.

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a workman not ashamed, rightly handling the word of the truth.

But avoid worldly empty babblings, for they will lead on to more ungodliness,

and their talk will have pasture like gangrene — among whom are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

who went astray concerning the truth, asserting that the resurrection has already taken place, and they are overthrowing the faith of some.

Nevertheless the firm foundation of God has stood, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and earth, and some to honor and some to dishonor.

If therefore anyone cleanses himself from these, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

And flee youthful desires, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, along with those calling on the Lord out of a pure heart.

And refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they breed quarrels.

And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel, but be gentle toward all, able to teach, forbearing,

in gentleness disciplining those who oppose, in case God may give them repentance to a knowledge of the truth,

and they may recover out of the snare of the devil, having been captured by him for his will.
