Amaziah Reigns in Judah
In the second year of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, became king.
He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan, from Jerusalem.
And he did the upright in the eyes of the LORD — only, not like David his father; according to all that Joash his father had done, he did.
Only, the high places were not removed; the people were still sacrificing and burning incense at the high places.
And it was, when the kingdom was firm in his hand, that he struck down his servants who had struck down the king his father.
But the sons of the strikers he did not put to death — as it is written in the book of the instruction of Moses, which the LORD commanded, saying: “Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, and sons shall not be put to death for fathers; but each man shall be put to death for his own sin.”
He struck down Edom in the Valley of Salt — ten thousand — and seized Sela in the war, and called its name Joktheel, to this day.
Jehoash Defeats Amaziah
Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look each other in the face.”
And Jehoash, king of Israel, sent to Amaziah, king of Judah, saying: “The thornbush that is in Lebanon sent to the cedar that is in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.’ And a beast of the field that is in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thornbush.
You have indeed struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Enjoy your honor — and stay in your house. Why should you provoke evil, so that you fall — you, and Judah with you?”
But Amaziah did not listen. And Jehoash, king of Israel, went up; and they looked each other in the face — he and Amaziah, king of Judah — at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah.
And Judah was struck down before Israel; and they fled, each man to his tents.
And Jehoash, king of Israel, seized Amaziah, king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh; and he came to Jerusalem, and broke through the wall of Jerusalem, from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate — four hundred cubits.
And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the house of the king, and the hostages; and he returned to Samaria.
Jeroboam II Succeeds Jehoash in Israel
And the rest of the acts of Jehoash that he did, and his might, and how he fought against Amaziah, king of Judah — are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
And Jehoash lay down with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son became king in his place.
The Death of Amaziah
And Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived after the death of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years.
And the rest of the acts of Amaziah — are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
And they conspired a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; and they sent after him to Lachish, and put him to death there.
And they carried him on the horses; and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers, in the city of David.
Azariah Succeeds Amaziah in Judah
And all the people of Judah took Azariah — he was sixteen years old — and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.
He built Elath and restored it to Judah, after the king lay down with his fathers.
Jeroboam II Reigns in Israel
In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, became king in Samaria — forty-one years.
And he did the evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not turn aside from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, by which he caused Israel to sin.
He restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath to the sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the LORD, the God of Israel, which he spoke by the hand of his servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet who was from Gath-hepher.
For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel — very bitter: none bound and none free, and no helper for Israel.
And the LORD had not said that he would wipe out the name of Israel from under the heavens; and he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.
And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might — how he made war, and how he restored Damascus and Hamath to Judah in Israel — are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
And Jeroboam lay down with his fathers, with the kings of Israel; and Zechariah his son became king in his place.
