The Lantern

II Corinthians8

Generosity Commended

Now we make known to you, brothers, the grace of God bestowed among the churches of Macedonia:

that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their sincerity.

For according to their ability, I testify, and beyond their ability, of their own accord

with much entreaty they implored of us the grace and the partnership of the ministry to the saints;

and not only as we had hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and to us through the will of God,

so that we encouraged Titus that, just as he had begun before, so he might also complete this grace among you as well.

But just as you abound in everything — in faith and in word and in knowledge and in all earnestness and in the love from us in you — see that you abound in this grace also.

I do not speak as a command, but through the earnestness of others, and proving the genuineness of your love as well.

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might be enriched.

And in this I give a judgment; for this is profitable for you, who began before, not only to act but also to will, a year ago.

But now complete the doing also, so that just as there was the readiness to will, so also there may be the completing out of what you have.

For if the readiness is present, it is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.

For it is not that there may be ease to others and affliction to you, but out of equality.

At the present time your abundance is for what is lacking to them, so that their abundance also may be for what is lacking to you, so that there may be equality.

Just as it is written: “The one who had much did not abound, and the one who had little did not lack.”

Titus Commended

But thanks be to God, who gave the same earnestness for you in the heart of Titus;

for he accepted the appeal, and being very earnest, of his own accord he went out to you.

And we sent with him the brother whose praise in the gospel is through all the churches;

and not only that, but he was also chosen by the churches as our fellow traveler with this grace that is being administered by us for the glory of the Lord himself and our readiness,

avoiding this, that anyone should blame us in this abundance being administered by us;

for we plan what is good, not only before the Lord but also before men.

And we sent with them our brother, whom we have often proved in many things to be earnest, but now much more earnest by his great confidence in you.

Whether as regards Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker for you; or our brothers, they are apostles of the churches, the glory of Christ.

Therefore show to them the proof of your love and of our boasting about you, before the face of the churches.
