II Corinthians10

Paul’s Apostolic Authority

Now I myself, Paul, encourage you through the meekness and gentleness of the Christ — I who in appearance am humble among you, but being absent am bold toward you.

But I implore that when present I may not be bold with the confidence with which I reckon to be daring toward some who reckon us as walking according to the flesh.

For though walking in flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh;

for the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly but powerful before God for the demolition of strongholds,

casting down reasonings and every high thing lifting itself up against the knowledge of God, and taking captive every thought unto the obedience of the Christ,

and being ready to avenge all disobedience, whenever your obedience is fulfilled.

You are looking at the things according to appearance. If anyone is persuaded in himself that he is of Christ, let him reckon this again within himself: that just as he is of Christ, so also are we.

For even if I should boast somewhat more excessively about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for tearing you down, I will not be put to shame,

so that I may not seem as if to frighten you through the letters.

For they say, “The letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak and his word is despised.”

Let such a one reckon this: that such as we are in word through letters when absent, such also we are in deed when present.

For we do not dare to classify or to compare ourselves with some of those commending themselves; but they, measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves with themselves, do not understand.

But we will not boast beyond measure, but according to the measure of the area that God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you.

For we are not overextending ourselves as though not reaching to you; for we came as far as you also in the gospel of the Christ,

not boasting beyond measure in the labors of others, but having hope, as your faith increases, to be enlarged among you according to our area unto abundance,

so as to evangelize in the regions beyond you, not to boast in another’s area in the things ready to hand.

But the one boasting, let him boast in the Lord;

for it is not the one commending himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
