The Defiling of Dinah
And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the land, saw her; and he took her and lay with her and violated her.
And his soul clung to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl, and he spoke to the girl’s heart.
And Shechem said to Hamor his father, “Get me this child as a wife.”
Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter — but his sons were with his livestock in the field, and Jacob kept silent until they came.
And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him.
And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard. And the men were grieved, and it burned in them greatly — for he had done an outrage in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing that is not done.
And Hamor spoke with them: “Shechem my son — his soul longs for your daughter. Give her to him, please, as a wife.
And intermarry with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
And live with us — the land shall be open before you. Live and trade in it, and take holdings in it.”
And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me, I will give.
Set the bride price and the gift as high as you like, and I will give whatever you say to me — only give me the girl as a wife.”
The Revenge of Dinah’s Brothers
And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit as they spoke — because he had defiled Dinah their sister —
and they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has a foreskin, for that is a disgrace to us.
Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you become like us, by every male among you being circumcised.
Then we will give our daughters to you, and take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people.
But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, we will take our daughter and go.”
And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor, and in the eyes of Shechem, Hamor’s son.
And the young man did not delay to do the thing, for he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. And he was the most honored of all his father’s house.
And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and they spoke to the men of their city:
“These men are at peace with us. Let them live in the land and trade in it — look, the land is wide open on both hands before them. Their daughters we will take for ourselves as wives, and our daughters we will give to them.
Only on this condition will the men consent to live with us and become one people: that every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
Their livestock, and their property, and all their animals — will they not be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will live with us.”
And all who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
And it happened on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob’s sons — Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers — each took his sword and came against the city undisturbed, and killed every male.
And Hamor and Shechem his son they killed with the edge of the sword; and they took Dinah from Shechem’s house and went out.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city that had defiled their sister.
Their sheep and their cattle and their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and whatever was in the field, they took.
And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives they took captive and plundered — everything that was in the houses.
And Jacob said to Simeon and to Levi, “You have brought trouble on me, making me a stench to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanite and the Perizzite. I am few in number; they will gather against me and strike me, and I shall be destroyed — I and my house.”
And they said, “Should he treat our sister like a whore?”
