Genesis33

Jacob Meets Esau

And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked — and look, Esau coming, and four hundred men with him. And he divided the children between Leah and Rachel and the two servant women.

And he put the servant women and their children first, and Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph last.

And he himself crossed over ahead of them, and bowed to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him — and they wept.

And he lifted up his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, “Who are these to you?” And he said, “The children with whom God has been gracious to your servant.”

And the servant women came near, they and their children, and bowed down.

And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down; and after that Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down.

And he said, “What do you mean by all this camp that I met?” And he said, “To find favor in the eyes of my lord.”

And Esau said, “I have plenty, my brother. Let what is yours be yours.”

And Jacob said, “Please, no — if I have found favor in your eyes, then take my gift from my hand. For I have seen your face — like seeing the face of God — and you have received me.

Take, please, my blessing that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me, and I have everything.” And he pressed him, and he took it.

And he said, “Let us set out and go, and I will go alongside you.”

And he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the nursing sheep and cattle are my care; if they are driven hard one day, all the flock will die.

Let my lord cross over, please, ahead of his servant, and I will move along slowly, at the pace of the work that is before me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord, to Seir.”

And Esau said, “Let me leave with you, please, some of the people who are with me.” And he said, “Why so? Let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”

And Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and he built himself a house, and for his livestock he made shelters. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

Jacob Settles in Shechem

And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram; and he camped facing the city.

And he bought the piece of the field where he had pitched his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money.

And he set up an altar there, and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
