Genesis15

God’s Covenant with Abram

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am a shield to you; your reward shall be very great.”

And Abram said, “Lord GOD, what will you give me, when I am going on childless, and the son of possession of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

And Abram said, “Look, to me you have given no seed — and look, a son of my house is my heir.”

And look, the word of the LORD came to him: “This one shall not be your heir; rather, one who comes out of your own body — he shall be your heir.”

And he brought him outside and said, “Look now toward the heavens, and count the stars — if you are able to count them.” And he said to him, “So shall your seed be.”

And he believed in the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

And he said to him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.”

God Confirms His Promise

And he said, “Lord GOD, by what shall I know that I will possess it?”

And he said to him, “Take for me a three-year-old heifer, and a three-year-old female goat, and a three-year-old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

And he took all these for him and cut them in two down the middle, and set each half opposite the other — but the birds he did not cut.

And the birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

And as the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram — and look, a terror, a great darkness, falling on him.

And he said to Abram, “Know surely that your seed will be sojourners in a land not theirs, and they will serve them, and they will afflict them — four hundred years.

But the nation they serve, I will also judge; and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

And you — you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.

And in the fourth generation they shall return here — for the guilt of the Amorite is not yet full.”

And when the sun had gone down and thick darkness had come — look, a smoking firepot and a torch of fire that passed between those pieces.

On that day the LORD cut a covenant with Abram: “To your seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates —

the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,

and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,

and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.”
