The Vision of Idolatry in the Temple

And it was in the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth of the month: I was sitting in my house and the elders of Judah were sitting before me, and the hand of the Lord GOD fell on me there.

And I looked, and see: a likeness like the appearance of fire — from the appearance of his waist and downward, fire; and from his waist and upward, like the appearance of radiance, like the gleam of electrum.

And he sent out the form of a hand and took me by a lock of my head; and a spirit lifted me between the earth and the heavens and brought me to Jerusalem in visions of God, to the opening of the inner gate that faces north, where the seat of the image of jealousy stood, the one that provokes to jealousy.

And see, the glory of the God of Israel was there, like the appearance I had seen in the valley.

And he said to me: Son of man, lift your eyes now toward the north. And I lifted my eyes toward the north, and see: north of the gate of the altar, this image of jealousy, at the entrance.

And he said to me: Son of man, do you see what they are doing — the great abominations that the house of Israel is doing here, to drive me far from my sanctuary? And you will turn again and see greater abominations.

And he brought me to the opening of the court; and I looked, and see: a hole in the wall.

And he said to me: Son of man, dig now in the wall. And I dug in the wall, and see: an opening.

And he said to me: Come and see the evil abominations that they are doing here.

And I came and looked, and see: every form of creeping thing and beast, a detestable thing, and all the idols of the house of Israel, carved on the wall all around, all around.

And seventy men from the elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan standing among them, were standing before them, each with his censer in his hand; and the rich cloud of incense was going up.

And he said to me: Have you seen, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each in the chambers of his carved images? For they say: The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.

And he said to me: You will turn again and see greater abominations that they are doing.

And he brought me to the opening of the gate of the house of the LORD that faces north; and see, there were the women sitting, weeping for Tammuz.

And he said to me: Have you seen, son of man? You will turn again and see abominations greater than these.

And he brought me to the inner court of the house of the LORD; and see, at the opening of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, about twenty-five men, their backs toward the temple of the LORD and their faces eastward — and they were bowing eastward to the sun.

And he said to me: Have you seen, son of man? Is it a light thing for the house of Judah to do the abominations they have done here, that they have filled the land with violence and turned back to provoke me? And see, they are putting the branch to their nose.

And I too will act in wrath; my eye will not pity, and I will not spare. And though they call in my ears with a great voice, I will not hear them.
