Exodus23

Justice and Mercy

You shall not take up an empty report. Do not put your hand with the wicked, to be a witness for violence.

You shall not follow the many into evil; and you shall not answer in a dispute so as to bend after the many and pervert justice.

And you shall not favor even a poor man in his dispute.

When you come upon your enemy’s ox or his donkey wandering, you shall surely return it to him.

When you see the donkey of one who hates you lying down under its burden, and you would refrain from helping him — you shall surely help with him.

You shall not bend the justice due your needy in his dispute.

Keep far from a false word; and do not kill the innocent and the righteous — for I will not declare the wicked righteous.

And you shall not take a bribe — for the bribe blinds the clear-sighted, and twists the words of the righteous.

And you shall not oppress a sojourner — you yourselves know the soul of the sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Sabbath Laws

And six years you shall sow your land and gather in its produce,

but the seventh you shall let it drop and leave it, and the needy of your people shall eat; and what they leave, the animals of the field shall eat. So you shall do with your vineyard and with your olive grove.

Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest — so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave, and the sojourner, may catch their breath.

And in all that I have said to you, be watchful; and the name of other gods you shall not bring to remembrance — it shall not be heard on your mouth.

The Three Feasts of Pilgrimage

Three times in the year you shall keep a festival for me.

You shall keep the Festival of Unleavened Bread: seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the appointed time in the month of Abib — for in it you went out of Egypt. And no one shall appear before my face empty-handed.

And the Festival of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors, of what you sow in the field; and the Festival of Ingathering, at the going out of the year, when you gather in your labors from the field.

Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the face of the Lord, the LORD.

You shall not sacrifice the blood of my sacrifice with anything leavened; and the fat of my festival shall not remain overnight until morning.

The first of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring to the house of the LORD your God. You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.

God’s Angel to Lead

Look, I am sending an angel before you, to keep you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.

Be watchful before him and listen to his voice; do not rebel against him — for he will not bear your wrongdoing, for my name is within him.

But if you surely listen to his voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies, and a foe to your foes.

For my angel will go before you and bring you to the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Canaanite, the Hivite and the Jebusite — and I will wipe them out.

You shall not bow down to their gods, and you shall not serve them, and you shall not do as they do — for you shall utterly tear them down and utterly shatter their standing stones.

And you shall serve the LORD your God, and he will bless your bread and your water; and I will remove sickness from your midst.

There shall be no woman miscarrying or barren in your land; the number of your days I will fill full.

I will send my terror before you, and I will throw into confusion every people among whom you come; and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you.

And I will send the hornet before you, and it will drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite from before you.

I will not drive them out from before you in one year, or the land would become a desolation, and the animals of the field would multiply against you.

Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you are fruitful and take possession of the land.

And I will set your border from the Sea of Reeds to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the River — for I will give the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out from before you.

You shall not cut a covenant with them or with their gods.

They shall not dwell in your land, or they will make you sin against me — for if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you.
