Deuteronomy25

Fairness and Mercy

When there is a dispute between men, and they come near to the judgment, and the judges judge them, then they shall declare the righteous one righteous and the wicked one wicked.

And it shall be, if the wicked one deserves to be struck, that the judge shall have him lie down and be struck in his presence, by number, according to his wickedness.

Forty times he may strike him; he shall not add more — lest, if he adds to strike him beyond these many blows, your brother be degraded before your eyes.

You shall not muzzle an ox while it is threshing.

Widowhood and Marriage

When brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not become an outsider’s, outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her for himself as a wife, and do a brother-in-law’s duty for her.

And it shall be, the firstborn that she bears shall stand in the name of his dead brother, so that his name is not wiped out from Israel.

But if the man does not want to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate, to the elders, and say, “My husband’s brother has refused to raise up a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to do a brother-in-law’s duty for me.”

And the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him. And if he stands firm and says, “I do not want to take her,”

then his brother’s wife shall come near to him before the eyes of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot, and spit in his face; and she shall answer and say, “So shall it be done to the man who will not build his brother’s house.”

And his name shall be called in Israel, “the house of the pulled-off sandal.”

When men fight together, a man and his brother, and the wife of the one comes near to deliver her husband from the hand of the one striking him, and she puts out her hand and seizes him by his private parts,

then you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall not pity.

Standard Weights and Measures

You shall not have in your bag a stone and a stone — a large and a small.

You shall not have in your house an ephah and an ephah — a large and a small.

A whole and righteous stone you shall have; a whole and righteous ephah you shall have — so that your days may be long on the ground that the LORD your God is giving you.

For everyone who does these things, everyone who does injustice, is an abomination to the LORD your God.

Revenge on the Amalekites

Remember what Amalek did to you on the way, when you came out of Egypt —

how he met you on the way and cut down all the stragglers at your rear, when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear God.

And it shall be, when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess it, you shall wipe out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens. You shall not forget.
