Deuteronomy24

Marriage and Divorce Laws

When a man takes a wife and becomes her husband, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found in her something indecent, and he writes her a document of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house,

and she goes out of his house, and goes and becomes another man’s —

and the latter man hates her, and writes her a document of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house; or the latter man who took her as his wife dies —

her first husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she has been made unclean; for that is an abomination before the LORD. And you shall not bring sin on the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army, and no duty shall pass on him for anything. Free he shall be for his house one year, and he shall bring joy to his wife whom he has taken.

Additional Laws

No one shall take a mill or an upper millstone in pledge — for he would be taking a life in pledge.

If a man is found stealing a soul from his brothers, from the sons of Israel, and treats him as merchandise and sells him, then that thief shall die. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

Take care, in a mark of tzaraath, to keep with great care and to do according to all that the Levitical priests instruct you; as I commanded them, you shall keep to do.

Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam, on the way, when you came out of Egypt.

When you lend your neighbor a loan of anything, you shall not go into his house to take his pledge.

Outside you shall stand, and the man to whom you are lending shall bring the pledge out to you, outside.

And if he is a poor man, you shall not lie down to sleep with his pledge.

You shall surely return the pledge to him at the going down of the sun, so that he may lie down in his own garment and bless you; and it shall be righteousness for you before the LORD your God.

You shall not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether of your brothers or of your sojourners who are in your land, within your gates.

On his day you shall give his wage, and the sun shall not go down on it — for he is poor, and to it he lifts up his soul — so that he does not cry out against you to the LORD, and it be sin in you.

Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, and sons shall not be put to death for fathers; each man shall be put to death for his own sin.

You shall not bend the judgment of the sojourner or the fatherless, and you shall not take a widow’s garment in pledge.

And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the LORD your God ransomed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.

When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not turn back to take it. It shall be for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow — so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the boughs after yourself; it shall be for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean after yourself; it shall be for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
