Deuteronomy21

Atonement for an Unsolved Murder

If one slain is found on the ground that the LORD your God is giving you to possess, fallen in the field, and it is not known who struck him down,

then your elders and your judges shall go out and measure to the cities that are around the slain one.

And it shall be, the city nearest to the slain one — the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd that has not been worked, that has not pulled in a yoke.

And the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a valley with running water, which is neither worked nor sown; and there in the valley they shall break the heifer’s neck.

And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward — for them the LORD your God has chosen to minister to him and to bless in the name of the LORD, and at their mouth shall every dispute and every assault be settled.

And all the elders of that city, the nearest to the slain one, shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley;

and they shall answer and say, “Our hands did not shed this blood, and our eyes did not see.

Make atonement for your people Israel, whom you ransomed, O LORD; and do not set innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel.” And the blood shall be atoned for them.

So you shall purge the innocent blood from your midst, when you do what is right in the eyes of the LORD.

Marrying a Captive Woman

When you go out to war against your enemies, and the LORD your God gives them into your hand, and you take them captive,

and you see among the captives a woman beautiful in form, and you desire her, and would take her for yourself as a wife,

then you shall bring her into the midst of your house; and she shall shave her head and trim her nails,

and put off the garment of her captivity from her, and stay in your house and weep for her father and her mother a month of days. And after that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.

And it shall be, if you no longer delight in her, then you shall send her away for her own soul. But you shall surely not sell her for silver; you shall not treat her as merchandise, because you have humbled her.

Inheritance Rights of the Firstborn

If a man has two wives, the one loved and the other unloved, and both the loved and the unloved have borne him sons, and the firstborn son belongs to the unloved —

then it shall be, in the day he gives his sons their inheritance of what is his, he may not treat the son of the loved as firstborn ahead of the son of the unloved, the true firstborn.

For the firstborn, the son of the unloved, he shall acknowledge, giving him a double portion of all that is found with him — for he is the first of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

A Rebellious Son

If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who does not listen to the voice of his father or to the voice of his mother, and they discipline him and he does not listen to them,

then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his place,

and they shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he does not listen to our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.”

And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die. So you shall purge the evil from your midst; and all Israel shall hear and fear.

Cursed Is Anyone Hung on a Tree

And if there is in a man a sin with a judgment of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,

his body shall not stay overnight on the tree; for you shall surely bury him that same day — for a hanged man is a curse of God — and you shall not make unclean your ground that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
