Deuteronomy18

Provision for Priests and Levites

The Levitical priests — all the tribe of Levi — shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel. The fire offerings of the LORD, and his inheritance, they shall eat.

And he shall have no inheritance in the midst of his brothers; the LORD — he is his inheritance, as he spoke to him.

And this shall be the due of the priests from the people, from those who sacrifice a sacrifice, whether ox or sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the stomach.

The first of your grain, of your new wine, and of your fresh oil, and the first of the fleece of your flock, you shall give him.

For him the LORD your God has chosen out of all your tribes, to stand and minister in the name of the LORD — he and his sons, all the days.

And when the Levite comes from any of your gates, out of all Israel where he sojourns, and comes with all the desire of his soul to the place that the LORD chooses,

then he may minister in the name of the LORD his God, like all his brothers the Levites who stand there before the LORD.

Portion for portion they shall eat, besides what comes from the sale of his fathers’ estates.

Sorcery Forbidden

When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to do according to the abominations of those nations.

There shall not be found among you one who passes his son or his daughter through the fire, one who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer,

or a charmer of charms, or one who consults a ghost or a familiar spirit, or one who seeks the dead.

For everyone who does these things is an abomination to the LORD; and because of these abominations the LORD your God is dispossessing them from before you.

You shall be whole with the LORD your God.

For these nations that you are dispossessing listen to soothsayers and to diviners; but as for you — not so has the LORD your God appointed for you.

A Prophet Like Moses

A prophet from your midst, from your brothers, like me, the LORD your God will raise up for you. To him you shall listen —

according to all that you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb, on the day of the assembly, saying, “Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, and let me not see this great fire anymore, so that I do not die.”

And the LORD said to me, “They have done well in what they have spoken.

A prophet I will raise up for them from the midst of their brothers, like you; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

And it shall be, the man who does not listen to my words that he speaks in my name — I myself will require it of him.

But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods — that prophet shall die.”

And if you say in your heart, “How shall we know the word that the LORD has not spoken?” —

when the prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, and the word does not happen and does not come about, that is the word that the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be in dread of him.
