The Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

And it happened, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

At that time the LORD said to Joshua, Make yourself flint knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

What does it profit, if we fast for our sins and again commit sins? What does it profit to have washed and again to wallow in the mire? Have you fasted for some time? It is as though in the meantime you had departed from Egypt.

Now, this was a figure of baptism, for, just as circumcision cuts off from the body a part which is not useful but a useless superfluity, so by holy baptism are we circumcised of sin. It is obvious that sin is a superfluity of concupiscence and of no use.

And Joshua made him flint knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the warriors, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were warriors, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: to whom the LORD swore that he would not show them the land, which the LORD swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.

And their children, whom he raised up in their place, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

And it happened, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they remained in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

And the LORD said to Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

And they did eat of the old grain of the land on the next day after the Passover, unleavened cakes, and parched grain in the very same day.

And the manna ceased on the next day after they had eaten of the old grain of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

And it happened, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and there stood a man opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went to him, and said to him, Are you for us, or for our adversaries?

And therefore one must beware and act carefully, so that you may knowingly discern the kind of visions, just as Joshua the son of Nun also, when he saw a vision, knowing that there was temptation in this, at once inquires of him who appeared and says: "Are you ours or of our adversaries?" Divine providence surrounds all persons at all times, but it is not visible except to those who have purified their souls of sin and think about God at all times.

And he says: "I am the prince of the host of the Lord's power; now I have come." And when he had heard this, Jesus worshiped and said: "Lord, what do you command your servant?" What is it that Jesus teaches us through this?

A brother asked a hermit, 'Is it good to be always repenting?' He answered, 'We have seen Joshua the son of Nun; it was when he was lying prostrate on his face that God appeared to him' (cf. Josh. 5:14).

And the commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, Take your sandal off your foot; for the place on which you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.
