The wordof the LORDthat came to Joelthe sonof Pethuel.
Hearthis, you old men,and give ear,all you inhabitantsof the land.Has this been in your days,or evenin the daysof your fathers?
Tellyou your childrenof it, andletyour childrentelltheir children, and their childrenanothergeneration.
That which the palmerwormhas lefthas the locusteaten;and that which the locusthas lefthas the cankerwormeaten;and that which the cankerwormhas lefthas the caterpillereaten.
Awake, you drunkards, and weep;and howl, all you drinkersof wine, because of the new wine;for it is cut offfrom your mouth.
For a nationhas come upupon my land, strong, and without number, whose teetharethe teethof a lion, and he has the cheek teethof a great lion.
He has laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he has made it clean bore, and cast it away; its branches are made white.
A Call to Mourning
Lamentlike a virgingirdedwith sackclothfor the husbandof her youth.
The grain offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD’s ministers, mourn.
The fieldis wasted, the landmourns;for the grainis wasted:the new wineis dried up,the oillanguishes.
Be ashamed,O you husbandmen;howl,O you vinedressers, for the wheatand for the barley;because the harvestof the fieldis perished.
The vineis dried up,and the fig treelanguishes;the pomegranatetree, the palm treealso, and the apple tree, evenall the treesof the field, are withered:because joyis withered awayfrom the sonsof men.
A Call to Repentance
Girdyourselves, and lament, you priests:howl, you ministersof the altar:come, lie all nightin sackcloth, you ministersof my God:for the grain offeringand the drink offeringis withholdenfrom the houseof your God.

Alasfor the day!for the dayof the LORDisat hand, and as a destructionfrom the Almightyshall it come.
Is not the foodcut offbefore our eyes, yes, joyand gladnessfrom the houseof our God?
The seedis rottenunder their clods, the garnersare laid desolate, the barnsare broken down;for the grainis withered.
How do the beastsgroan!the herdsof cattleare perplexed, because they have no pasture;yes, the flocksof sheepare made desolate.
O LORD,to you will I cry:for the firehas devouredthe pasturesof the wilderness, and the flamehas burnedall the treesof the field.
The beastsof the fieldcryalso to you: for the riversof watersare dried up,and the firehas devouredthe pasturesof the wilderness.
