The wordof the LORDthat came to Jeremiahconcerningthe dearth.
Judah mourns, and its gates languish; they are black to the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.
And their nobleshave senttheir little onesto the waters:they cameto the pits, andfoundno water;they returnedwith their vesselsempty;they were ashamedand confounded, and coveredtheir heads.
Because the groundis chapt, for there was no rainin the earth, the plowmenwere ashamed, they coveredtheir heads.
Yes, the hindalso calvedin the field, and forsookit, because there was no grass.
And the wild donkeysdid standin the high places, they snuffed upthe windlike dragons;their eyesdid fail, becausethere wasno grass.
O LORD,though our iniquitiestestifyagainst us, doyouitfor your name’ssake: for our backslidingsare many;we have sinnedagainst you.
O the hope of Israel, its savior in time of trouble, why should you be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turns aside to wait for a night?
Why should you be as a manastonished,as a mighty manthatcannotsave?yet you, O LORD,artin the midstof us, and we are calledby your name;leaveus not.
Thus saysthe LORDto this people,Thus have they lovedto wander, they have not refrainedtheir feet, therefore the LORDdoes not acceptthem; he will now remembertheir iniquity, and visittheir sins.
Then saidthe LORDto me, Praynot for this peoplefortheirgood.
When they fast,I will not heartheir cry;and when they offerburnt offeringand an oblation,I will not acceptthem: but I will consumethem by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.
Then saidI, Ah,LordGOD!look, the prophetssayto them, You shall not seethe sword, neither shall you have famine;but I will giveyou assuredpeacein this place.
Then the LORDsaidto me, The prophetsprophesyliesin my name:I sentthem not, neither have I commandedthem, neither spoketo them: they prophesyto you a falsevisionand divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceitof their heart.
Therefore thus saysthe LORDconcerning the prophetsthat prophesyin my name, and I sentthem not, yet they say,Swordand famineshall not be in this land;By swordand famineshall those prophetsbe consumed.
And the peopleto whom they prophesyshall be cast outin the streetsof Jerusalembecauseof the famineand the sword;and they shall have none to burythem, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters:for I will pourtheir wickednessupon them.
Therefore you shall saythis wordto them; Let my eyesrun downwith tearsnightand day,and let them not cease:for the virgindaughterof my peopleis brokenwith a greatbreach, with a verygrievousblow.
If I go forthinto the field, then look the slainwith the sword!and if I enterinto the city, then look them that are sickwith famine!yes, both the prophetand the priestgo aboutinto a landthat they knownot.
